Artsen hoopvol na zeventien uur durende operatie aan rechterbeen Correa

Juan Manuel Correa heeft een eerste stap in zijn herstel gezet. De Amerikaans-Ecuadoraanse coureur onderging een zeventien uur durende operatie aan zijn rechter onderbeen en die noemden de chirurgen achteraf succesvol.

Correa was eind augustus betrokken bij de zware crash in de Formule 2 op Spa-Francorchamps, waarbij Anthoine Hubert het leven liet. Correa liep zware verwondingen aan zijn benen op, kampt ook met letsel aan zijn rug en lag bovendien ruim twee weken in een kunstmatige coma, nadat er complicaties met zijn longen optraden. Daaruit ontwaakte hij bijna twee weken geleden.

Afgelopen zondag onderging Correa een eerste operatie aan zijn rechter onderbeen, dat zwaar toegetakeld was na de crash. De procedure kostte meer dan zeventien uur, maar drie dagen na de ingreep stellen de doktoren dat de operatie succesvol was. Wel plaatst de familie in een statement een kleine kanttekening: "Tijdens de procedure werden de doktoren gedwongen meer botmateriaal te verwijderen dan verwacht."

"Ook moesten ze en aantal problemen met bloedvaten oplossen, maar ze stellen dat het hoofddoel van de operatie bereikt was. Juan Manuel blijft in een ziekenhuis in Londen en hem staat over twee weken nog een extra, minder complexe operatie te wachten." Volgens de doktoren kan Correa het ziekenhuis over zes weken verlaten, waarna hem een jaar met 'therapie, revalidatie en correctieve operaties' te wachten staat om zijn rechtervoet en -enkel weer volledig te kunnen gebruiken.

Correa reageert voor het eerst zelf

In het persbericht reageerde Correa voor het eerst sinds de crash ook zelf. "Deze afgelopen weken zijn extreem zwaar geweest, zwaarder dan ik ooit fysiek en mentaal gehad heb. Ik weet wat de toekomst is wat betreft het herstel van mijn benen, waarbij vooral mijn rechterbeen nog behoorlijk onzeker is. Mijn fysieke revalidatie zal extreem lang en gecompliceerd zijn. Ik ben nog steeds aan het verwerken wat er is gebeurd en wat er nu gebeurt."

"Ik wil een ieder bedanken die op een of andere manier hun steun heeft laten zien. Ik ben geraakt door het enorme aantal bezorgde en liefdevolle berichten dat ik heb ontvangen. Vanuit de grond van mijn hart wil ik jullie bedanken en jullie laten weten dat jullie steun en positiviteit een verschil gemaakt hebben."

  Flauw natuurlijk maar inderdaad wat een prestatie van dat team zeg. Knap wat ze allemaal kunnen tegenwoordig.

Ik ben benieuwd of Correa doorgaat met racen (als Zanardi dat nog kon moet Correa dat ook kunnen) of dat de crash zijn kijk op het leven heeft veranderd. Tot die tijd wens ik hem beterschap en succes met het herstel.

Mooi dat t een beetje de goede kant op gaat. Zwaar hoor voor die gast. Betrokken bij zo’n naar ongeluk en daarbij zo zwaar gewond raken en alle complicaties.. Wens m veel kracht en positiviteit toe bij z’n revalidatie.

Mensen, hier krijg ik het nou koud van, ik heb vergelijkbaar letsel en operaties gehad en dit bericht warpte mij even terug in de tijd, naar een verleden waar ik niet graag meer aan denk, maar waarvan ik nog iedere dag met de gevolgen moet leven.

het statement van Juan geeft mij de ‘chillz’ want de strijd, en emotionele rollercoaster waar hij momenteel in zit, is voor weinig mensen, echt te begrijpen!

Ik hoop echt op het beste voor deze man, want ookal lijkt de operatie op dit moment geslaagd, hij is er nog lang niet! Er kunnen nog zoveel complicaties en onvoorziene gebeurtenissen om de hoek komen loeren. Dit is echt het gevecht van zijn leven

  Ik heb gelukkig nooit zo in de kreukels gelegen maar een maatje van me wel na een motorongeluk. Dat leek qua ellende behoorlijk hier op. Uiteindelijk is ie er na bijna twee jaar revalideren en operaties om onderbeen te reconstrueren aardig af gekomen, maar wel een vastgezette enkel en verminkte voet
