De Vries start laatste F2-hoofdrace vanaf P6, Sette Camara pakt pole

Nyck de Vries zal zijn laatste hoofdrace in de Formule 2 vanaf de zesde positie moeten aanvangen. De pole position in Abu Dhabi was voor Sergio Sette Camara, die het verschil maakte in de laatste sector.

In Rusland kroonde De Vries zich al tot kampioen in de Formule 2 en dit weekend rijdt hij voor het laatst in de klasse. Tussendoor mocht hij vorig weekend al proeven aan de Formule E, waar hij zesde werd bij zijn debuutwedstrijd in Saoedi-Arabië. Vandaag stond de kwalificatie in de Formule 2 op het programma, maar het lukte de Nederlander van ART Grand Prix niet om de pole position te pakken.

De Vries kwam ruim een halve seconde tekort op de snelste tijd en moet daardoor vanaf de zesde positie vertrekken op zaterdag. Het lukte hem niet om het tempo van Sergio Sette Camara te volgen. De Braziliaan noteerde een 1:49.751 en dat was voldoende voor de pole position. Een grote marge naar de nummer 2, Callum Ilott, had hij echter niet: slechts 89 duizendsten zat er tussen de coureurs.

Louis Deletraz en Nobuharu Matsushita zorgden ervoor dat Carlin de hele tweede startrij bezet op het Yas Marina Circuit door de derde en vierde tijd te rijden in de kwalificatie. De Vries deelt de derde startrij met Guanyu Zhou, die zijn snelste tijd wel reed toen er met gele vlaggen gezwaaid werd in de laatste bocht na een spin van Sean Gelael. Nicholas Latifi, Jack Aitken, Nikita Mazepin en Mick Schumacher completeren de top 10.
