De Vries teleurstellend dertiende, Sette Camara wint hoofdrace Abu Dhabi

Sergio Sette Camara heeft een spectaculaire hoofdrace van de Formule 2 in Abu Dhabi gewonnen. De Braziliaan van DAMS rekende in de slotfase af met Louis Deletraz, die uiteindelijk achter Nobuharu Matsushita en Guanyu Zhou vierde werd.

De hoofdrace in Abu Dhabi werd een strategisch schaakspel. De ultrasofts hadden een zeer korte levensduur, maar de meeste coureurs gingen op deze band van start. In de openingsfase van de race vielen deze coureurs, onder wie vroege leider Deletraz en Sette Camara, ietwat terug en zodra de pits geopend werd voor de pitstops, doken alle coureurs op de zachtste compound zo snel mogelijk de pits in.

Verschillende strategieën zorgen voor spektakel

Matsushita startte de race echter op de supersofts en klom daardoor snel naar de leiding, die hij vervolgens lang vast wist te houden. De Japanner ging uiteindelijk pas vier ronden voor het einde de pits in, net op het moment dat de eveneens op supersofts gestarte Zhou bij hem aanklopte. De Chinees reed echter nog een ronde langer door voor zijn stop en dat bleek geen goede keuze te zijn.

Deletraz kwam door de pitstops aan de leiding te liggen, maar de Zwitser kon die positie niet vasthouden. Sette Camara had in de slotfase van de race nog wat leven in zijn banden over, passeerde de Carlin-coureur en reed vervolgens onbedreigd naar zijn eerste zege in een F2-hoofdrace. Deletraz kreeg daarna ook nog bezoek van Matsushita en Zhou, die hij allebei ook moest laten gaan.

Ghiotto loopt in op Latifi voor tweede plek kampioenschap

Achter Deletraz pakte Callum Ilott de vijfde positie, gevolgd door Luca Ghiotto en Nicholas Latifi. Laatstgenoemde coureurs gaan in de sprintrace van zondag uitmaken wie de tweede positie in het kampioenschap bemachtigt. Giuliano Alesi mag door zijn achtste positie die race van pole position vertrekken. De laatste punten werden gescoord door Mick Schumacher en Nikita Mazepin.

Kampioen Nyck de Vries kende absoluut geen goede race in Abu Dhabi. De Nederlander mocht vanaf de zesde positie starten, maar het lukte hem niet om goed op zijn banden te letten. Het gevolg was dat hij in de openingsfase al ver terugviel en na de pitstops overkwam hem hetzelfde. Daardoor zat er niet meer in dan een dertiende positie.

Mooi dat Nyck zijn oude niveau weer gehaald heeft. Jammer dat Toto hem niet ipv Bottas durfde te zetten.

  Het was dit jaar gewoon een heel matig veld, dat weet iedereen.
  
  net zoals iedereen weet dat Nyck gewoon heel vaak problemen heeft met de banden, al geef jij daar altijd liever de teams waar hij gereden heeft de schuld van, maar het is dan wel heel gek dat dat bij alle teams waar hij reed voorkwam.
