Formule 2 groeit in 2020 naar 11 teams door komst Hitech Grand Prix

De grid van de Formule 2 wordt uitgebreid in 2020. Hitech Grand Prix, dat al actief is in de FIA Formule 3, zal aankomend seizoen voor het eerst uitkomen in de laatste opstapklasse richting de Formule 1.

Hitech komt komend seizoen in actie met startnummers 24 en 25 en het is nog onduidelijk welke coureurs het team zal inzetten. Het Britse team, dat in 2002 opgericht werd door Dennis Rushen en David Hayle, kwam de afgelopen jaar uit in de FIA Formule 3, de Aziatische Formule 3 en het winterkampioenschap van het laatstgenoemde kampioenschap. Ook levert Hitech GP de technische ondersteuning bij onder andere de W Series.

"Ik wil Bruno [Michel] bedenken voor het vertrouwen dat hij in Hitech heeft door ons een extra inschrijving te geven. Wij hadden altijd al aspiraties om de stap naar de F2 te maken zodra wij voet aan de grond kregen in de Formule 3", vertelde Hitech-eigenaar Oliver Oakes. "Door de introductie van de 18-inch velgen en updates op de auto was nu toetreden veel beter dan aan het eind van 2020, want dan zouden we al een jaar achterstand hebben in het leerproces."

CEO Michel verwacht weinig aanpassingsproblemen

De laatste keer dat de Formule 2 11 teams op de grid had staan, was in 2016. Toen reed de klasse nog onder de naam GP2. Ook Formule 2-CEO Bruno Michel kijkt ernaar uit om Hitech Grand Prix in zijn klasse te verwelkomen. "Met plezier verwelkom ik Hitech GP op de F2-grid van 2020. Zoals ik eerder al gezegd heb, tonen veel teams aan de lopende band interesse in toetreding tot ons kampioenschap."

"De huidige rijdersmarkt en de kwaliteiten van Hitech maakten deze toevoeging aan het nieuwe seizoen mogelijk. Hitech kende een sterk Formule 3-seizoen in 2019 en hoewel ik weet dat ze er pas laat bij komen, zullen ze in staat zijn om zich snel aan te passen aan de Formule 2 om het gevecht aan te gaan met de andere teams."

  als er meer teams bij komen dan word de budget nog meer onder de loep genomen lijkt me... meer teams is meer verdelen en de grote teams willen het meest :)
