Ferrari-protegé Callum Ilott gaat testen voor Alfa Romeo in Abu Dhabi

Formule 2-rijder en Ferrari-junior Callum Ilott zal voor Alfa Romeo gaan rijden tijdens de Youn Driver Test in Abu Dhabi. De Brit zal dan voor het eerst in zijn carrière achter het stuur kruipen van een 2020-bolide. Het was de bedoeling dat dit al zou gebeuren tijdens de Grand Prix van de Eifel, maar slechte weersomstandigheden zorgde ervoor dat zijn debuut uitgesteld moest worden.

De 22-jarige Ilott is ontzettend blij met deze mogelijkheid: ''Ik kijk er ontzettend naar uit om in te stappen in Abu Dhabi. Ik ben erg dankbaar naar Alfa Romeo en de Ferrari Driver Acedemy voor deze kans. Het is erg belangrijk om zoveel mogelijk in een F1-wagen te rijden. Het is de manier om ervaring te vergroten, niet alleen in de cockpit, maar ook door het samenwerken in het team, de monteurs en bemanning zijn een van de beste ter wereld en ik kan veel van hen leren.''

Alfa Romeo-teambaas Fred Vasseur voegt er aan toe: "Callum is een van de veelbelovende jonge rijders die doorkomt, zoals je kan zien aan zijn prestaties in de Formule 2 van dit jaar. Hij had pech met het missen van de vrije training vorige maand op de Nürburgring. Hij verdient deze kans met het team in Abu Dhabi.'' De Fransman heeft niets meer dan lof voor de Ferrari-pupil. ''Zijn houding en werkethiek heeft een positieve indruk achtergelaten bij het team toen hij voor ons testte vorig jaar en we kijken er erg naar uit om met hem te testen in Abu Dhabi.''

Het jonge talent staat op dit moment tweede in het Formule 2-kampioenschap met 22 punten achterstand op kampioenschapsleider Mick Schumacher. Ilott maakt kans om door Ferrari naar voren geschoven te worden om als vaste coureur bij het team van Haas aan de slag te gaan. Ook andere protogés van het Italiaanse talentenprogramma, waaronder Mick Schumacher en Robert Shwartzman, hebben kans om hun droom te verwezenlijken. Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto heeft kortgeleden bevestigd dat een van de drie coureurs volgend jaar in de koningsklasse is te bewonderen.
