Callum Ilott kruipt op de staart van Mick Schumacher na dominante pole

Callum Ilott heeft in de strijd om de Formule 2-titel goede zaken gedaan door zijn vijfde poleposition van dit jaar te scoren. Met als bijvangst vier punten voor het kampioenschap. Daarmee heeft de Brit het gat naar leider in de stand, Mick Schumacher, verkleind tot achttien punten. De Duitser kwam niet verder dan een tiende startplaats. Met nog vier races te gaan, is het allesbehalve beslist. Maar er staat nog meer op het spel voor de Ferrari-protogés. Namelijk een F1-zitje voor volgend seizoen. Beide talenten hebben daar nog kans op, al wordt er wel in de paddock gefluisterd dat Mick Schumacher wordt gepromoveerd naar het F1-team van Haas, dat met de Ferrari-krachtbon achterin rijdt.

Na een maand van wachten, mochten de F2-rijders weer aan de slag dit weekend in de voorlaatste ronde van het seizoen. Op het Bahrein International Circuit was Ilott heer en meester. Waar zijn rivalen, Schumacher en Red Bull-junior Yuki Tsunoda het lieten afweten, pakte de Brit overtuigend de eerste startplek met vier tienden verschil op de nummer twee Felipe Drugovich. De Brit Dan Ticktum mag de wedstrijd als derde aanvangen met naast zich de Nieuw-Zeelander Marcus Armstrong. De zoon van Jean Alesi, Guiliano, behaalde voor het eerst een top-zes-klassering.

In tegenstelling tot Illot, kreeg de kampioenschapsleider het niet voor mekaar. ''De kwalificatie ging niet zoals gehoopt. We kunnen niet helemaal tevreden zijn'', zegt de zoon van racelegende Michael Schumacher teleurgesteld. ''We hadden wat kleine aanpassingen gedaan aan de setup en toen ik met een tweede setje banden naar buiten ging, deed de auto niet wat ik had verwacht. Ook lukte het me niet een goede ronde neer te zetten. We gaan heel goed naar de data kijken en op basis daarvan een strategie bedenken voor de race. Ik ga alles geven, we gaan ons best doen, dat is zeker'', kijkt de Duitser met een positieve blik vooruit.

De race is morgen te zien op Ziggo Sport Racing om 10.00 Nederlandse tijd.

Tsunoda zou wel eens een hele kostbare fout kunnen hebben gemaakt. Door een spin in de kwalificatie start hij morgen in de hoofdrace als laatste (22) en zal hij zich door het hele veld moeten ploegen.

Tsunoda zou wel eens een hele kostbare fout kunnen hebben gemaakt. Door een spin in de kwalificatie start hij morgen in de hoofdrace als laatste (22) en zal hij zich door het hele veld moeten ploegen.
Om voor een stoeltje bij AlphaTauri in aanmerking te komen, moet hij als 4e eindigen, terwijl er drie coureurs binnen 7 punten achter hem staan.
Gaat dus heel spannend worden deze twee weekenden.

  Voordeeltje is wel dat Tsunoda uitstekend kan inhalen, en daar in Bahrein voldoende mogelijkheden voor zijn.

  Niet dat het me uitmaakt, maar er zijn niet a te veel plekken te verdelen die 7 punten of meer opleveren. Zeer waarschijnlijk zal ook nog eens 1 er worden ingenomen door lott en die staat al boven hem.
  Is er ook nog een 2de race hier? Dan wordt het natuurlijk wel een ander verhaal.

  Aha, Volgend weekend ook nog een race. Dacht eigenlijk dat het dit weekend de laatste was.
  En een extra race op zondag. Dat betekent zeker dat de kans groter is dat hij buiten de top 5 zakt.
  Maar hij heeft dan nog wel een weekend om het recht te gaan zetten. Zou hem dat niet lukken dan verdient hij wat mij betreft ook geen plek in F1.

  Onvoorstelbaar hoe hij twee keer over naar voren reed, vooral de tweede keer op de Medium van 15 naar 6!! Die jongen is echt héél goed.
