Debutant Liam Lawson wint direct zijn eerste race

De Nieuw-Zeelander Liam Lawson heeft zijn debuut in de Formule 2 direct bekroond met de zege. De 19-jarige Hitech Racing-coureur won nipt van Jehan Daruvala. David Beckmann werd derde met veertien seconden achterstand. De wedstrijd werd diverse malen ondeebroken door neutralisaties.

Ook kwamen twee Nederlanders voor het eerst in actie in de eennahoogste opstapklasse. Richard Verschoor moest uitvallen na een tik van Dan Ticktum in de eerste bocht, terwijl Bent Viscaal niet verder kwam dan de elfde plaats.

De opzet van het F2-weekend is anders dan voorgaande jaren. In plaats van twee zijn er nu drie races per weekend. Op zaterdag twee sprintraces en op zondag de hoofdrace. De tweede sprintrace is zaterdag om 18.00 uur.
