Lawson wint in nat Monaco tweede sprintrace

In natte omstandigheden heeft Liam Lawson de tweede sprintrace in Monaco gewonnen. Hij finishte voor Dan Ticktum en Oscar Piastri. Nederlander Richard Verschoor kende een sterke ochtend in het vorstendom. De Nederlander werd zevende vanaf de dertiende startplaats en scoorde twee punten.

De straten in het prinsdom waren 's nachts nat geregend. Het hele veld startte daarom op de regenband. De top acht van de race op vrijdag werd omgedraaid. Marcus Armstrong mocht vooraan beginnen, maar moest door technische problemen beginnen vanuit de pits. Zijn startplek bleef leeg.

Lawson en Piastri stonden vooraan door het wegvallen van Armstrong. Piastri nam de leiding. Achter hem knalde Gianluca Petecof in de vangrail bij Sainte Devote na contact met een tegenstander. De wedstrijd kon gewoon verder, want de bolide wss in no-time weggetakeld.

Lawson voerde de druk op bij Piastri. In ronde 5 van de 30 passeerde de Brit de koploper bij de chicane na de tunnel, maar beiden haalden niet de bocht. In La Rascasse, een langzame bochtencombinatie vlak voor het einde van de ronde, was het wel raak. Dan Ticktum passeerde Piastri voor P2 in ronde 15 en opende de jacht op Lawson.

Maar het spannendste gevecht was voor P6. Theo Pourchaire leidde de trein met daarin Verschoor op P9. De Nederlander stootte door naar achtste positie en profiteerde daarna van een fout door Roy Nissany. De Israëliër elimineerde zichzelf in de eerste vangrail en had onherstelbare schade en kon punten op zijn buik schrijven.

Bent Viscaal en David Beckmann zorgden nog voor een safety-car-periode in de slotfase nadat ze met elkaar in aanraking kwamen in de eerste bocht. Daardoor konden niet alle 30 rondes afgewerkt worden. Met nog een minuut op de klok werd het veld weer losgelaten. Er werden nog twee rondes verreden, maar veel wisselingen gebeurde er niet meer.

Door de zege van Lawson kruipt de Brit dichterbij Zhou in de rangschikking en heeft nog maar 11 punten achterstand. Zhou, de winnaar van vrijdag, blijft steken op 56 punten door een nulscore. De Chinees nam in de tweede sprintrace de gok om over te stappen naar droogweerbanden, maar dat pakte niet goed uit.

Mooi dat Richard Verschoor weer geld bij elkaar heeft weten te sprokkelen, zodat hij dit weekend mee kan doen.
Hij reed goed voor een rookie, helemaal op deze natte en moeilijke baan.

  Het is eigenlijk best triest, heb je het talent en nog moet je smeken en bedelen voor geld. Zonde dat hij geen “grote” sponsor heeft zodat hij het hele seizoen verzekerd is van een start plek

  Gun dat Ticktum totaal niet, naar ventje.
  Hierdoor is Verschoor wel mooi een plaatsje opgeschoven.
  Ben het met je eens dat Verschoor beter is/lijkt dan Viscaal,
  die wél een boel geld bij elkaar heeft weten te sprokkelen.
  Mooi voor hem hoor, maar nu Verschoor nog!
