Van Amersfoort Racing reserveert tweede zitje voor Amaury Cordeel

Van Amersfoort Racing heeft de line-up voor het eerste seizoen in de Formule 2 compleet. Amaury Cordeel, een 19-jarige Belg, voegt zich bij de eerder deze week gepresenteerde Jake Hughes. Cordeel was vorig jaar namens Campos Racing actief in de Formule 3, zonder veel succes overigens. Hij wist geen enkel punt te scoren en legde in het kampioenschap beslag op de 23ste plaats.

In 2018 schreef hij het Spaans Formule 4-kampioenschap op zijn naam met MP Motorsport. Nu waagt Cordeel de sprong naar de Formule 2 met die andere Nederlandse renstal, Van Amersfoort Racing. "Ik ben extreem blij dat ik deze stap hogerop mag maken", reageert de Belg. "Ik heb de auto leren kennen bij de test in Abu Dhabi en het is een indrukwekkende machine. Het is een wereld van verschil met de Formule 3, maar ik voelde me gelijk op mijn gemak achter het stuur."

"Ik ben me ervan bewust dat me een uitdagend seizoen te wachten staat en dat de leercurve steil zal zijn. Dat ik op Van Amersfoort Racing kan bouwen geeft me echter veel vertrouwen. Ik ben dankbaar voor deze kans en kijk ernaar uit om deel uit te maken van hun debuutjaar in de Formule 2. Ik moet alles wat ik in de Formule 3 geleerd heb aanspreken en daarop voortborduren. Ik voel me er klaar voor", aldus de Belg.

Van Amersfoort Racing-directeur Rob Niessink: "Na de test in Abu Dhabi wisten we genoeg, we wilden Amaury in de auto. Hij is toegewijd om te presteren en vormt een goede combinatie met het team. Hij is intelligent en een snelle leerling, iets wat wij belangrijk vinden in een coureur. We gaan er alles aan doen om hem te helpen om zijn potentieel te benutten. Het wordt voor ons als debutanten niet gemakkelijk, maar we zijn vastberaden om te presteren en een goede eerste indruk in de Formule 2 achter te laten."
