FIA wil duurzame brandstof in 2024 introduceren in Formule 2

Autosportfederatie FIA doet er alles aan om de autosport in de toekomst groener te maken. Men is zich bewust van de problemen waar de wereld mee te maken heeft en wil een steentje bijdragen. Vanaf 2026 wil men in de Formule 1 gaan rijden met duurzame brandstoffen, ook de Formule 2 zal gaan overstappen naar deze brandstof.

Het lijkt er zelfs op dat de hoogste opleidingsklasse eerder naar een duurzame brandstof gaat overstappen dan de Formule 1. De FIA wil namelijk dat de Formule 2 vanaf 2024 gaat rijden met een duurzame brandstofmix van 55 procent. De autosportfederatie heeft motorbouwers uitgenodigd om met een voorstel te komen om van 2024 tot en met 2026 de power units te leveren voor de klasse.

De Formule 2 rijdt al sinds 2018 met het huidige chassis van Dallara en de motoren van Mecachrome. De FIA wil dat de nieuwe motoren niet alleen werken op de 55 procentmix maar ook op de volledig duurzame brandstof die men later wil introduceren. Als de nood aan de man is moeten de motoren ook in staat zijn om op de huidige brandstof van de Formule 1 te kunnen werken.
