F3-vicekampioen Maloney maakt F2-debuut in Abu Dhabi bij Trident

Barbadaan Zane Maloney zal zich opmaken voor zijn debuut in de Formule 2. De negentienjarige coureur van het eilandstaat Barbados vervangt Calan Williams bij het team van Trident voor de slotraces in Abu Dhabi, welke volgend weekend plaatsvinden. Maloney wordt zodoende teammaat van de Nederlander Richard Verschoor.

De talentvolle coureur maakte in 2022 zijn debuut in de Formule 3 waarbij hij deel uitmaakte van het team van Trident. In zijn eerste vier races behaalde Maloney geen bijzondere resultaten, maar gedurende het seizoen wist The Boy From Barbados terug te krabbelen. De jongeling maakte zijn langzame start meer dan goed dankzij sterke resultaten bij de laatste vier races van het seizoen. Zodoende mocht Maloney zichzelf uiteindelijk alsnog vicekampioen noemen, op slechts vijf puntjes van kampioen Victor Martins.

Maloneys goede scores en zijn vechtlust zoals getoond in de tweede seizoenshelft, heeft ervoor gezorgd dat hij de laatste race van het F2-seizoen mag rijden voor hetzelfde team als waarvoor hij in de Formule 3 reed. Trident-teammanager Giacomo Ricci is blij met de stappen die Maloney heeft gemaakt en meent dat het team hem de basis kan geven voor een goed resultaat: “We zijn vol vertrouwen dat Trident hem de best denkbare ondersteuning kan geven voor het uitdagende Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi."
