Pineiro onbedreigd naar overwinning in eerste race Oostenrijk

Ramon Pineiro heeft zojuist de eerste race op de Red Bull Racing op zijn naam geschreven. De Spaanse coureur begon de race vanaf de pole position en reed zonder problemen naar de finish. Kampioenschapsleider Mirko Bortolotti eindigde als tweede, terwijl Kelvin Snoeks de finishvlag niet zag.

Meteen in de eerste bocht ging het mis voor Johannes Theobald. De bolide van de Duitser ging over de kop, maar hij kon ongedeerd uitstappen. Kelvin Snoeks werd door de chaos in de eerste bocht even opgehouden en verloor wat plaatsen. Mikkel Mac en Miki Monras kwam een ronde later binnen voor reparaties nadat zij in de eerste bocht van de tweede ronde een touché hadden.

Vooraan was Pineiro ondertussen goed weggekomen, gevolgd door Bortolotti. De Spanjaard wist zijn voorsprong uit te bouwen tot 5,4 seconden op de finishlijn. Bortolotti breidde zijn voorsprong in het kampioenschap uit met een tweede plaats, want titelrivaal Christopher Zanella kwam niet verder dan de twaalfde plaats. De Zwitser reed zesde toen hij werd bestraft met een drive through-penalty vanwege het overschrijden van de tracklimits.

Mihai Marinescu eindigde als derde, nadat hij succesvol zijn positie had verdedigd tegenover Alex Brundle. Jack Clarke pakte de vijfde stek, gevolgd door Julian Theobald. Snoeks had zich opgewerkt naar de twaalfde plaats, maar moest opgeven met een kapotte ophanging.
