Sprintrace: Iwasa wint na uitvallen Hadjar, Verschoor net geen podium

Ayumu Iwasa profiteerde in de F2-sprintrace van het uitvallen van Isack Hadjar en won hierdoor de wedstrijd. Ondanks enkele neutralisaties hield de Japanner zijn hoofd koel. MP-Motorsportcoureur Jehan Daruvala kwam te kort en nam genoegen met P2. Jak Crawford eiste met een getergde Richard Verschoor achter zich aan plaats drie op.

Het leek erop dat de eerste ronde zonder kleerscheren voltooid werd. Niets was minder waar. Bij de chicane na uitkomen tunnel stond Kush Maini omgekeerd na een touché van achter. Dat zorgde voor een opstopping waarvan Nicolas Nissany het grootste slachtoffer werd met een ongelukkige DNF. De Safety Car moest uitrukken zodat de marshalls de wagen van de Israëliër weg konden slepen.

Waar het ene drama eindigde, begon bij de hervatting in ronde zes van 30 meteen de volgende. Leide Hadjar kreeg een lekke band en zag een potentiële overwinning in rook opgaan. Iwasa nam de kop over met Daruvala en Crawford in de achtervolging.

Daruvala was nipt sneller dan de Japanse Red Bull-junior voor zich. Over de helft van de race zat de MP Motorsport-coureur rondom een seconde, maar met of zonder DRS was inhalen voor Daruvala een onmogelijke missie.

Datzelfde ervaarde Verschoor op P4 vlak achter Crawford in gevecht om de laatste podiumtrede. "Hij is zo langzaam", sprak de Nederlander met enige wanhoop. Erbij komen is één, echter passeren in Monte Carlo is ook voor de Van Amersfoort Racing een heel ander verhaal. Verschoor loerde op een foutje.

Met nog tien ronden voor de boeg moest Daruvala P1 laten varen. Het spannendste gevecht ging tussen Crawford en Verschoor. De Nederlander zat bovenop de staart van zijn Amerikaanse opponent. Maar de aanval werd tijdelijk onderbroken door een Safety Car vanwege de gecrashte wagen van Amaury Cordeel in gevecht met Juan Manuel Correa.

Door de neutralisatie kwam het hele veld weer dichtbij elkaar en zorgde dat weer voor wat spanning in het slot van de wedstrijd. Met zes ronden nog te gaan, werd het veld weer losgelaten. Het zorgde vooralsnog niet voor positiewisselingen.

Iwasa reed simpel weg van de rest en won simpel de wedstrijd in het prinsdom. Met de zege neemt de Japanner opnieuw de leiding in handen in de tussenstand.
