Frederik Vesti houdt een sprankje hoop op de F2-titel na de zege in de sprintrace in Abu Dhabi. De Mercedes-junior kon nummer twee Enzo Fittipaldi in de slotfase inhalen na een boeiend gevecht om de winst. Richard Verschoor gaf het een podium een Nederlands tintje met de derde positie

Kampioenschapsleider Theo Pourchaire snoepte twee punten mee na een veertiende startplek en heeft 16 punten voorsprong op Vesti met nog een hoofrace voor de boeg waarin maximaal 26 punten zijn te verdienen.

De wedstrijd begon eneverend met een vierstrijd om positie een, met polesitter Enzo Fittipaldi, Vesti, Verschoor en Isack Hadjar. Vesti kwam als vierde de tweede ronde in en liet de wedstrijd na zich toekomen. Op het einde zat de Deen continu in de DRS van Fittipaldi en kon profiteren van een remfout van zijn Braziliaanse concurrent.

Hadjar kon het tempo niet volhouden en viel verder naar achteren. Verschoor was één van de coureurs die deze kans niet onbeut liet. Pourchaire werkte zich knap op naar P7, maar kon als achterste wagon in de DRS-trein geen verschil maken en hoopte op misfortuin voor hem.

Zondagochted is de finalerace. Daarin wordt beslist of Pourchaire of Vesti kampioen wordt.
