Carlo van Dam tekent bij TOMs Toyota

Duits Formule 3-kampioen Carlo van Dam komt komend seizoen uit in het Japanse Formule 3-kampioenschap. De Nederlander heeft een contract getekend bij TOMs, het officiële fabrieksteam van autofabrikant Toyota. Coureurs als Jacques Villeneuve, Adrian Sutil en Tom Coronel reden eerder voor TOMs. De presentatie van Van Dam en zijn teamgenoten Takuto Iguchi en Keisuke Kunimoto is op 9 februari. De eerste race van het nieuwe seizoen is op 5 april op de Fuji Speedway.

Na het winnen van het Duitse kampioenschap werd ik uitgenodigd door een Oostenrijks team om in Macau te rijden, licht Carlo toe. Als gevolg van mijn prestaties daar werd ik benaderd door Susumu Koumi van TOMs. Vorige week ben ik in Japan aangekomen en hebben we de deal rond gemaakt TOMs en Toyota zijn twee grote en gerespecteerde namen in de internationale autosport en hun aanbod zie ik dan ook als een mooie beloning voor mijn prestaties tot dusver. Ik ben optimaal gemotiveerd om deze kans maximaal te benutten.

Carlo debuteerde als Europees kartkampioen in de autosport en kwam via een derde plaats in het EK Formule Renault in de Formule 3 terecht. Als regerend Duits kampioen behoort hij tot de favorieten voor de Japanse titel: Vanzelfsprekend ben ik ambitieus, ook omdat ik uitkom voor één van de beste Formule 3-teams ter wereld. Ik ben onder de indruk van hun werkwijze. Het leven hier bevalt me goed, maar ik ben blij dat ik begin februari voor het eerst met de auto rijd - dan gaat het seizoen echt van start.
