Nico Hulkenberg domineert eerste race

Nico Hulkenberg heeft vanmorgen de eerste race van de Formule 3 Euroserie op de Norisring gewonnen. Hij leidde van start tot finish.

Bij de start is het Mika Maki die vanaf de eerste rij de beste start heeft. Hij passeert Hulkenberg, maar verkijkt zich op de eerste haarspeldbocht en geeft de leiding hiermee weer terug aan Hulkenberg. Een paar bochten later wordt Maki uit de race gekegeld door een overenthousiaste Jules Bianchi. Beide rijders moeten opgeven. Bianchi's teamgenoot James Jakes ligt er dan ook al uit, hij wordt in een spin geduwd door Jean-Karl Vernay.

Achter Hulkenberg wordt Honda-protege Koudai Tuskadoshi tweede. Hulkenberg: "Ik pushte tot ik vijf seconden voorlag op Koudai. Toen kon ik in alle rust de achterblijvers voorbij. Op dit circuit heb je niet zoveel last van wegvallende downforce dus als mijn remmen goed blijven kan ik denk ik een hoop wagens passeren morgen."

Jean-Karl Vernay gaat in de elfde ronde voorbij aan Rodolfo Gonzalez voor de laatste podiumplaats. Vernay: "Het was een beetje gekkenwerk in de eerste ronde. Het spijt me voor James, maar Maki schoot wijd in de eerste bocht en Gonzalez stak binnendoor dus ik kon nergens heen om hem te ontwijken."

Gonzalez houdt in het begin een aantal auto's op, waardoor Dani Clos in de problemen komt en door een spectaculaire drift naast de baan terecht komt. In zijn val neemt hij Gonzalez mee. Dit incident is in het voordeel van Eduardo Mortara, die de vierde plek pakt en daarmee zichzelf bovenaan de stand in het kampioenschap houdt. De vele incidenten is tevens in het voordeel van Christian Vietoris. De Duitser klimt van de 27e plek naar de zesde plek aan de finish.

Mortara leidt nog steeds het kampioenschap, maar Hulkenberg neemt de tweede plek over van Maki, nu op dertien punten achterstand van Mortara. Morgen wordt de tweede race verreden met een eerste startrij voor Erik Janis en Robert Wickens.
