Carlo van Dam beleeft perfect weekend op Suzuka

Carlo van Dam heeft een goede slag geslagen in het Japanse Formule 3-kampioenschap. De Nederlander, rijdend voor topteam TOMs Toyota, ging voorafgaand aan het weekend op het circuit van Suzuka al aan de leiding in de titelstrijd en die eerst positie heeft hij alleen maar verstevigd. Van Dam won beide races en heeft met nog zes races te gaan een voorsprong van 69 punten in het kampioenschap.

Ik had opnieuw een goede start, zegt Carlo op zijn website over de tweede race. Maar omdat het circuit erg vuil was, kwam ik aanvankelijk wat moeizaam weg bij de rest van het veld. Toch wist ik een gat te slaan van ongeveer vijf seconden. Ik wilde ook absoluut weer dat extra punt scoren voor de snelste raceronde.

Op mijn pitboard zag ik halverwege de race dat mijn snelste tijd 1.58,0 was en ik kon me niet voorstellen dat die tijd snel genoeg zou zijn. Ik heb daarom de laatste paar ronden nog eens extra hard gepusht. Achteraf zag ik dat ik die laatste ronden opnieuw elke keer 1.58,0 reed, maar dat bleek toen ruim een halve seconde sneller te zijn dan de rest. Het circuit was gewoon langzamer vandaag door het vuil en de nog hogere temperatuur van 38 graden. Door dat extra pushen had ik bij de finish een gat van 8,5 seconden op mijn teamgenoten.

Ik ben niet aan de andere kant van de wereld gaan wonen om tweede te worden, dus dit was een perfect weekeinde. Je wilt altijd winnen en als je het dan op deze manier doet geeft het nog meer voldoening. Vooral de afgelopen drie races zijn we oppermachtig geweest en hebben we eruit gehaald wat erin zit.
