Brendon Hartley stapt in bij RC Motorsport

Brendon Hartley, racewinnaar in de Britse Formule 3, komt uit voor RC Motorsport in de Formule 3 Euroserie. De Nieuw-Zeelander zal in eerste instantie alleen het komende raceweekeinde op de Nurburgring in actie komen. RC is een van de twee teams die gebruik maken van Volkswagen-motoren. Drijvende kracht achter de deal is waarschijnlijk Red Bull, die Hartley ondersteunt en tevens nauwe banden onderhoudt met Volkswagen.

RC heeft dit jaar nog geen aansprekende resultaten behaald en zette vlak voor de vorige race in Zandvoort vaste rijder Maxi Gotz op straat. Hartley moet het team nu op sleeptouw nemen. Hartley: "Dit seizoen is nog niet echt geweldig voor RC en om erachter te komen hoe ze zichzelf kunnen verbeteren hebben ze mijn hulp gevraagd. Ik kijk uit naar het raceweekeinde, al denk ik wel dat ik het zwaar ga krijgen. Ik heb de auto al getest op Vallelunga en ook op de Nurburgring krijgen we genoeg testmogelijkheden. We moeten de voorgaande resultaten vergeten en de toekomst positief tegemoet zien."

Toch is Hartley er niet zeker van dat hij na de Nurburgring ook nog voor RC zal uitkomen. "Ik heb geen idee. Dit is gewoon een kans op het laatste moment. Maar als we een goed resultaat kunnen halen, wie weet."

Hartley staat dankzij drie overwinningen momenteel vijfde in het Britse Formule 3-kampioenschap. De mogelijkheid om in de Euro Serie te blijven is er wel, want de beide kampioenschappen kruisen elkaar niet meer de rest van dit seizoen.
