Hulkenberg wint eerste race in Brands Hatch

Nico Hulkenberg heeft vandaag opnieuw goede zaken gedaan in het Formule 3 Euroserie-kampioenschap. De jonge Duitser pakte vandaag onbedreigd de overwinning in de eerste race in Brands Hatch en breidt opnieuw zijn voorsprong in het kampioenschap uit. Al voor het weekeinde kreeg Hulkenberg de leiding in handen door het terugdraaien van een beslissing van de stewards in Zandvoort. De tien punten zorgden toen in een klap voor de leiding in het kampioenschap.

Polesitter Jules Bianchi heeft de beste start en leidt comfortabel in de eerste bocht, terwijl Hulkenberg teveel wielspin heeft. Derde man Koudai Tsukakoshi krijgt hem zelfs nog bijna te pakken aan de buitenkant. Daarachter zijn het Sam Bird en James Jakes die met elkaar in aanraking komen, waarbij Bird de grindbak in spint en moet opgeven.

Hulkenberg heeft ondertussen moeite om zijn banden op temperatuur te krijgen, zodat Bianchi een comfortabele voorsprong op kan bouwen. Niet veel later volgt er een beslissend moment in de wedstrijd. De stewards oordelen dat Bianchi zijn snelste rondetijd heeft verbeterd tijdens een gele vlag-situatie en wordt bestraft met een drive-through-penalty. Hij zou niet de enige zijn; nog vijf coureurs zouden een zelfde straf krijgen.

Op de helft van de wedstrijd komt Bianchi binnen voor zijn pitstop. Hij keert terug als zevende en rekent al snel af met Christian Vietoris. Maar bij een zelfde soort poging op teamgenoot James Jakes gaat het mis. Ze raken elkaar en belandden allebei in het grind. Na dit voorval is het Hulkenberg die onbedreigd naar de overwinning kan rijden, gevolgd door Tsukakoshi. Yann Clairay profiteert van het wegvallen van onder andere Bianchi en wordt derde, gevolgd door de eerste Volkswagen-coureur: Eduardo Mortara. Een goed resultaat, want de Fransman had voor de race de hoop uigesproken zo dicht mogelijk bij Hulkenberg te willen blijven in de titelstrijd.

De Nederlanders zitten er goed bij. Renger van der Zande finisht als zesde, terwijl Henkie Waldschmidt de vlag ziet als tiende.
