Kevin Magnussen op zoek naar F3-zitje

Met namen als Roberg en Piquet kent de Formule 1 al een aantal zonen van oud-coureurs en daar lijkt nu nog een naam bij te komen. Kevin Magnussen, de 15-jarige zoon van oud-Formule 1-coureur Jan Magnussen, hoopt zijn nog prille autosport-carriere voort te kunnen zetten in het Britse Formule 3-kampioenschap.

Magnussen domineerde dit seizoen het Deense Formule Ford-kampioenschap en testte van de week een Formule 3-auto van Carlin Motorsport op het circuit van Pembrey. De jonge Kevin hoopt zijn carriere nu voort te kunnen zetten in Engeland.

Magnussen: "Ik had een goed gevoel over de auto. Ik denk dat ik hele goede tijden heb kunnen rijden. Als ik volgend jaar mocht kiezen wat ik wilde doen, dan zou ik voor Carlin willen rijden in het Britse Formule 3-kampioenschap. Dat zal uiteraard ook afhangen van mijn sponsorbudget."

Magnussen jr erkent dat zijn vaders records een opsteker voor hem zijn. "Het zou natuurlijk tof zijn als ik in hetzelfde kampioenschap kan gaan rijden als waar mijn vader veel records heeft behaald. Ik denk niet dat ik zijn prestatie kan evenaren, maar ik zal dan in ieder geval mijn uiterste best doen."

Jan Magnussen won in 1994 de Britse Formule 3-titel door veertien van de achttien races te winnen. Tot op heden is zijn record van meeste zeges in een seizoen nog niet verbroken. In het vervolg van zijn carriere werd Jan betiteld als de nieuwe Senna en reed in de Formule 1 voor Stewart Grand Prix, voor hij halverwege het seizoen 1998 werd vervangen door Jos Verstappen.
