Van der Zande: "Het was een bijzonder mooi en spannend seizoen"

Renger van der Zande eindigde in de laatste race in het Formule 3 Euroseries-kampioenschap als vijfde, waardoor hij in de eindstand de vierde positie inneemt. De laatste wedstrijd op de Hockenheimring was nog een hele bevalling, aangezien de Nederlander bijna uit de race geramd werd door James Jakes. Een oplettende Van der Zande voorkwam een zwaar ongeluk.

Ik heb gisteren amper een raceronde gereden, zegt de Prema Powerteam-coureur. Ik heb voornamelijk zigzaggend achter de safety-car rondgereden. Ik had nog wel de nodige plannen voor de race, maar zo gaat dat soms. Toen Jakes eraf vloog in de hairpin zag ik het achter me gebeuren. Ik zag de chaos en had direct door dat hij me vol ging raken als ik niks zou doen. Ik gaf daarom maar een flinke dot gas, waardoor ik de bocht miste, maar een flinke crash voorkwam.

Terugkijkend op dit seizoen kan je zeggen dat we erg sterk van start zijn gegaan, maar dat we vervolgens wel wat steekjes hebben laten vallen. Als we een paar puntjes meer hadden behaald, was ik als tweede geëindigd. Desalniettemin was het een bijzonder mooi en spannend seizoen en kijk ik uit naar de traditionele allerlaatste Formule 3-race van het seizoen, in Macau.
