Van Dam: "Wist dat het in één rondje moest gebeuren"

Carlo van Dam bewees zichzelf vandaag een goede dienst voor de prestigieuze Formule 3 Grand Prix in Macau. Op het nauwe stratencircuit reed de TOMs Toyota-coureur de snelste kwalificatietijd en dus vertrekt hij morgen in de kwalificatierace vanaf pole position. De Nederlander wist dat alles in dat ene rondje in de slotfase van de training moest samenkomen.

Van Dam vertelt op autosport.com: De kwalificatie was verre van gemakkelijk. We hadden al verwacht een stap voorwaarts te maken qua snelheid en dat lukte ons ook. De vele rode vlaggen maakte het lastig, maar dat is voor iedereen hetzelfde. Ik wist dat ik maar één rondje de juiste temperatuur in de banden en het perfecte ritme zou hebben, en ik slaagde erin om daar een goede ronde van te maken. De pole is een mooie opsteker voor mij en het team voor de rest van het weekend.

Van Dam houdt zich niet bezig met Keisuke Kunimoto en Edoardo Mortara die achter hem starten. Ik focus me alleen op mijn eigen rijden. Gisteren zei iedereen dat het tussen Edoardo en mij zou gaan en vandaag mengden toch ook andere jongens zich in de strijd. Misschien gebeurt dat morgen weer. Ik doe gewoon mijn best en meer kan ik niet doen, maar ik heb wel vertrouwen in een goede afloop.
