Teleurstellende dag voor Carlo van Dam in Macau

Carlo van Dam had zich een hele andere zaterdag voorgesteld op het stratencircuit van Macau. De Japanse Formule 3-kampioen vertrok van pole position, maar al heel snel gaat het mis. Teamgenoot Kunimoto en Volkswagen-coureur Eduardo Mortara zijn beter weg.

Wat later in de eerste ronde toucheert de Nederlander de vangrail, waardoor hij op weg gaat naar de pits voor reparaties. Tot overmaat van ramp raakt hij ook nog landgenoot Renger van der Zande, waardoor zijn race definitief voorbij is.

Van Dam: "De twee coureurs die me inhaalden bij de start gingen een beetje van het gas. Dat is op zich wel normaal, maar voor mij was er geen ruimte meer en ik belandde op het vuil. Daardoor raakte ik de vangrail en kreeg ik een lekke band. Ik probeerde de auto terug te brengen, maar Van der Zande raakte me. Het is allemaal heel ongelukkig."

De zaterdag verliep dus erg teleurstellend voor de TOM's-coureur, maar Van Dam heeft met de pole position aangetoond dat de snelheid er goed in zit. De Nederlander is dan ook vastbesloten een goed resultaat neer te zetten tijdens de tweede race, morgen. "We hebben de snelheid, dus als we 15 ronden kunnen racen kan ik misschien nog in de topvijf komen, hoewel ik niet eens precies weet vanaf welke positie ik ga starten. Ik wil het team laten zien dat ik niet voor niets hier naartoe gekomen ben."
