Giovinazzi verliest wellicht overwinning in kwalificatierace Macau

Antonio Giovinazzi won dit weekend de kwalificatierace in Macau, maar zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid deze zege toch verliezen. De coureur wordt bestraft voor zijn aandeel in de crash met Daniel Juncadella in de eerste ronde van de race, en ontvangt daarvoor een tijdstraf. Dit zal betekenen dat Felix Rosenqvist de overwinning in de kwalificatierace toegeschoven krijgt.

Juncadella en Giovinazzi lagen respectievelijk tweede en derde na de start, maar een touché in de San Fanscisco Bend zorgde ervoor dat Juncadella de bandenstapels invloog. Dit zorgde voor een safety car-situatie, en direct na de herstart wist Giovinazzi Rosenqvist te verschalken voor de leiding van de race. Giovinazzi gaf deze leiding niet meer uit handen.

Stewards hebben voorlopig Giovinazzi een tijdstraf toegekend vanwege het incident in de eerste ronde, maar of deze blijft staan is nog niet zeker. De stewards zijn hierover nog steeds in overleg.
