Edoardo Mortara zet pole position om in dominante overwinning

Edoardo Mortara heeft zojuist een dominante overwinning gescoord op de Norisring. De Italiaan startte de race vanaf de pole position en was de hele race onbedreigd. Marco Wittmann eindigde als tweede, gevolgd door Valtteri Bottas.

Mortara kwam goed weg bij de start van de race, gevolgd door Bottas en Wittmann. Echter, Bottas begon steeds verder terug te vallen, maar werd 'gered' door de safety car. Deze moest de baan opkomen na een crash tussen Mathias Laine, Daniel Juncadella en Nicolas Marroc.

Bottas kon ook bij de herstart niet aanhaken bij Mortara en verloor zelfs de tweede plaats aan Marco Wittmann, die de Fin in de eerste bocht passeerde. Bottas eindigde als derde, gevolgd door teamgenoot Alexander Sims. Sims kende een rommelige race en spinde zelfs een keer. Desondanks wist de Britse coureur zijn vierde plaats in de laatste ronde weer terug te pakken.

Roberto Merhi pakte achter Sims de vijfde plaats, voor Carlos Munoz en Antonio Felix da Costa. Matias Laine, die eerder in de race betrokken was bij een incident met Juncadella en Marroc, pakte alsnog de achtste positie en de pole voor de tweede race. Laurens Vanthoor reed lange tijd rond de zesde plaats, maar door een drive trough-penalty viel de Belg terug naar de negende plaats.
