Volkswagen stopt als motorleverancier in Formule 3

Volkswagen zal zich niet beschikbaar stellen als motorleverancier voor de nieuwe Formule 3-klasse die vanaf volgend jaar in het voorprogramma van de Formule 1 bij Grands Prix komt te staan. De Duitse autogigant staakt de activiteiten als Formule 3-motorleverancier.

Volkswagen-motorsportbaas Sven Smeets: "Volkswagen kan terugkijken op een prachtige erelijst in de Formule 3. Meer dan drie decennia lang hebben teams en coureurs met Volkswagen-aandrijving geweldige successen gevierd tegen rijders met andere motorleveranciers en daar zijn we ze zeer dankbaar voor."

Hierdoor blijft alleen Mercedes over als motorleverancier in het Europees kampioenschap Formule 3, als die serie na de introductie van de nieuwe Formule 3-klasse überhaupt blijft bestaan. Volkswagen trok zich eerder al terug uit het WRC en de Dakar Rally, terwijl dochterondernemingen Audi en Porsche hun LMP1-programma's in het WEC beëindigden.

    jammer, Formule 3 was wel een soort van mini formule 1 (zeker jaren terug), waar teams een eigen chassis konden kopen, (Dallara, Ligier, Lola (volgens mij) en een eigen motor),

    Om vervolgens in te stappen bij F1? Jammer dat ze uit de F3 stappen! VW zou heel veel aandacht krijgen als ze in de F1 stappen.

Toen Opel zich terug trok als financier voor het Spiess programma heeft Volkswagen het overgenomen en met succes. De VW motoren stonden bekend als betrouwbaar met de juiste configuratie.

      Spies heeft altijd geconcurreerd met grote motorenbouwers (inhouse builders) Bij Fiat was dat de Novamotor, bij Mercedes werden de motoren getest door AMG in combinatie met volgens mij HWA en in Japan met Toyota (Tom's). Deze grote namen hebben in de loop der jaren bij reglementswijzigingen altijd met elkaar kunnen concurreren. Vergeet niet dat het Formule 3 programma wereldwijd enorm gereduceerd is. Tegenwoordig zijn er slechts een handvol Formule 3 engine suppliers in de wereld. 1 Daarvan is overigens Toyota de hoofdleverancier voor de EuroFormula Open, het kampioenschap waar dit jaar Bent Viscaal aan mee zal doen voor Teo Martin Motorsport.

      @NEPPATSREV In de tijd van Max had je Mercedes in de F3 bij Prema dat team was het topteam mede door de motoren van Mercedes. Maar de VW motor was toen een prima optie voor de andere teams en was zeker geen slechte motor. In het algemeen werd aangenomen dat de Mercedes motor heel iets sterker was dan de VW motor maar daar zat maar heel weinig tussen...

    Zal me niks verbazen als ze bij Porsche ondertussen met man en macht bezig zijn om een supersterk pakket te ontwikkelen voor de FE later dit jaar.
