Verschoor blijft bij MP Motorsport voor seizoen in FIA Formule 3

Richard Verschoor heeft duidelijkheid over waar hij in 2019 gaat racen. De Nederlander komt namens MP Motorsport uit in het FIA Formule 3, de opvolger van de GP3 Series. In die klasse kwam hij de tweede helft van 2018 ook al uit.

Verschoor en MP Motorsport kennen elkaar al goed. Toen de Nederlander in 2016 debuteerde in de autosport, deed hij dat bij het Nederlandse team in de Formule 4. Dat jaar veroverde hij twee titels (in het Spaanse en het Noord-Europese kampioenschap) en verdiende hij de overstap naar de Formule Renault 2.0. In het eerste seizoen kon hij weinig potten breken bij MP Motorsport, het tweede seizoen in 2018 brak hij vroegtijdig af voor het GP3-avontuur.

In de GP3 liet Verschoor aardige dingen zien. In vier raceweekends en acht races behaalde hij dertig punten, goed voor de vijftiende positie in de eindstand. Het grootste succes vierde de 18-jarige in Rusland, waar hij voor het eerst het podium mocht beklimmen in de GP3. In de voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen testte Verschoor vier dagen met de Formule 2-bolide van MP Motorsport, maar uiteindelijk is besloten om hem een jaar te laten rijpen in de Formule 3, de opvolger van de GP3.

"Het heeft even geduurd voordat ik eruit was, maar ik ben blij dat ik samen met MP Motorsport mijn zinnen heb gezet op de FIA F3", aldus Verschoor. "Natuurlijk was een vervolg in de Formule 2 prachtig geweest, maar ik heb op F3-niveau nog iets af te maken. Ik weet zeker dat ik komend seizoen samen met MP mooie dingen kan laten zien. Intussen kan ik meekijken bij het F2-team en daarvan leren, zodat ik goed voorbereid de volgende stap kan zetten."

Komend seizoen krijgt Verschoor bij MP Motorsport twee teamgenoten. Van Simo Laaksonen was al bekend dat hij het Nederlandse team zou komen versterken, maar tegelijk met Verschoor werd ook aangekondigd dat Liam Lawson door het team aangetrokken is voor een campagne in de Formule 3. Daarmee is het veld voor 2019 vrijwel compleet: alleen Jenzer Motorsport heeft nog een plekje open.

Jammer dat hij niet het budget voor de Formule 2 heeft gevonden. Zijn testdagen zagen er namelijk goed uit.

  Hij is nog jong, een jaartje in de F3 kan geen kwaad.
  Bovendien heeft hij weinig financiële steun, en dat zal niet in z'n voordeel werken helaas.

  Met goede prestaties in de F3 kunnen er natuurlijk deuren opengaan die nu nog gesloten zijn. En wie weet als hij RBR's nieuwe talent Lawson goed partij geeft, dat zelfs die nog geïnteresseerd raken (nemen de laatste tijd wel vaker coureurs terug die eerder weg gestuurd werden ;) )

  idd jmr, F3 veld dit jaar bulkt van het talent, heb zelf meer interesse voor de F3 dan F2.

Komend jaar top 3 rijden in de F3 dan de overstap naar F2 lijkt mij goed anders gaat hij de zelfde weg als de Vries en dat moet hij niet willen.
