Shwartzman op pole position voor eerste Formule 3-race

Ferrari Acadamy-coureur Robert Shwartzman heeft een uitstekende ronde afgeleverd om de eerste pole position te scoren in de nieuwe Formule 3-klasse. Dit jaar is het FIA European Formula 3-kampioenschap en de GP3-series samengevoegd tot één klasse. Het kampioenschap kent haar ouverture in Barcelona.

Regerend Europees Formule 3-kampioensteam Prema koos ervoor om alle drie de auto's in het midden van de sessie te laten rijden, door de dertig inschrijvingen was tijdens de vrije training gebleken dat het erg druk was op de vaan. Met SMP Racing-coureur Shwartzman behaalde de Italiaanse-renstal de pole.

Als tweede op de grid staat Renault-coureur Christian Lundgaard. Lungaard was in eerste instantie op weg naar de pole position, maar zag de Rus in extremis nog onder zijn tijd doorgaan. Marcus Armstrong (Ferrari Acadamy) en Jehan Daruvala (eveneens van Prema), gingen pas in een later stadium het circuit op en eindigde als derde en vierde.

Logan Sergeant zal als vijfde starten en MP Motorsport-coureur Simo Laaksonen werd knap zesde.

De Nederlanders zullen vanaf de achtste rij vertrekken. Richard Verschoor die voor MP Motorsport uitkomt reed een vijftiende tijd, Bent Viscaal was de snelste coureur van HWA Racelab. Viscaal, die zijn debuut maakt in deze klasse zal als zestiende starten. Teamgenoot Jake Hughes start als 29e, hij kende tijdens de kwalificatie problemen met zijn DRS-systeem. De eerste Formule 3-race in Barcelona zal deze ochtend verreden worden en zal omstreeks 10.15 uur starten.
