Jake Hughes snelste tijdens kwalificatie, Viscaal imponeert met achtste tijd

Jake Hughes is de ietwat verrassende 'polesitter' voor de Formule 3 race op het circuit van Paul Ricard. Morgenmiddag zullen de Formule 3-coureur de feature race rijden op het Franse circuit. Hughes die voor het Duitse HWA Racelab de teamgenoot is van Bent Viscaal was uiteindelijk 0.087 seconden sneller dan Jehan Daruvala. Bent Viscaal reed een uitstekende kwalificatie en start morgen als achtste.

In de laatste seconde van de kwalificatie kreeg Hughes het voor elkaar om een snellere ronde te rijden. Daruvala zag er eigenlijk gedurende de hele kwalificatie het beste uit, maar zijn vier tienden voorsprong op de rest van het veld verdween als sneeuw voor de zon toen Hughes er onderdoor ging. Rober Schwartzman zorgde ervoor dat de tweede Prema-auto in de top drie terecht kwam. De Russische Ferrari-Junior was ruim twee tienden langzamer.

De favorieten Lundgaard, Fewtrell en Beckmann kwamen er in Paul Ricard niet aan te pas. Lundgaard start als twaalfde, Fewtrell als veertiende en Beckmann start zelfs nog verder weg, hij was 22e.

Viscaal vertelde voorafgaande aan het raceweekend in Frankrijk aan GPToday.net: "We verwachten goede stappen vooruit te maken in Paul Ricard. Ik ben groot fan van de baan en daarom kijk ik er extra naar uit." De Nederlander en zijn team hadden in de maand pauze alle data van de race in Spanje geanalyseerd: "Wij kunnen op deze data verder bouwen. Ik ga mijn best doen om punten te pakken."

De achtste plaats van Viscaal en de pole position van Jake Hughes laat zien dat HWA Racelab zijn zaken goed voor elkaar heeft. Viscaal en Hughes, die goed met elkaar door een deur kunnen, rijden regelmatig samen op de simulator. Teamgenoot Keyvan Andres stelde teleur en was ruim anderhalve seconde langzamer. MP Motorsport-coureur Richard Verschoor kwalificeerde zich als dertiende.
