Daruvala onbedreigd naar zege in hoofdrace Frankrijk, vijfde plek voor Viscaal

De derde race van het Formule 3-seizoen is gewonnen door Jehan Daruvala. De coureur van Prema kwamen op Circuit Paul Ricard betrekkelijk eenvoudig eerder over de finish dan Robert Shwartzman en Pedro Piquet. Bent Viscaal pakte punten met de vijfde positie.

Jake Hughes mocht de race vanaf pole position aanvangen en bij de start behield hij de leiding, terwijl HWA Racelab-teamgenoot Viscaal meteen naar de vijfde positie opklom. Al in de vierde ronde kwam Shwartzman al aan de Nederlander voorbij en later in de race verloor hij ook posities aan Juri Vips en Alexander Peroni.

Vooraan begon het Prema-trio zich nadrukkelijk met de podiumplaatsen te bemoeien. Pedro Piquet werd eerst door Daruvala en Marcus Armstrong van een podiumplaats verdrongen en vervolgens begonnen zij zich ook met Hughes te bemoeien. De HWA-coureur moest Daruvala al snel laten gaan, maar met Armstrong en Shwartzman kon hij wel de strijd aangaan. Piquet bleef vervolgens op het vinkentouw zitten.

Viscaal houdt stand en profiteert van fouten

Dat was een verstandige keuze van de Braziliaan, want vijf ronden voor het einde ging het dan ook verkeerd. Hughes wilde in een actie voorbijgaan aan Armstrong en Shwartzman, maar daardoor kwam hij met eerstgenoemde in aanraking. De race van Hughes zat er daardoor op, terwijl Armstrong terugviel en Shwartzman en Piquet optimaal profiteerden.

Daruvala reed intussen relatief onbedreigd naar de zege toe, terwijl Shwartzman en Piquet in de slotfase een aanval van Vips konden afslaan. De Est werd vierde, voor Viscaal, die in de slotfase nog voorbijging aan Armstrong. Red Bull-junior Yuki Tsunoda werd zevende, voor Peroni, Liam Lawson en David Beckmann op P10.
