Armstrong naar pole position op Red Bull Ring, Nederlanders in middenmoot

Marcus Armstrong heeft in Oostenrijk zijn eerste pole position in de Formule 3 gepakt. Nederlanders Bent Viscaal en Richard Verschoor konden zich niet mengen in de strijd om pole en zaterdag als dertiende en veertiende.

Armstrong noteerde een 1:19.716, waarmee hij Max Fewtrell met ruim een tiende voorsprong van de pole position duwde. Jüri Vips volgt op minder dan twee tienden van de polesitter van Prema op de derde positie, gevolgd door Jehan Daruvala. De nummer 2 van het kampioenschap had zich waarschijnlijk graag beter gekwalificeerd, maar zal niet ontevreden zijn met het uiteindelijke resultaat.

Shwartzman niet voorbij P12 door problemen

Kampioenschapsleider en Prema-teamgenoot Robert Shwartzman kwam namelijk niet verder dan de twaalfde positie. Dat komt mede doordat de jonge Rus al redelijk vroeg in de sessie zijn auto moest parkeren met pech. Daruvala bevindt zich dus in een geweldige positie om een aanval te wagen op de leiding in het kampioenschap, omdat Shwartzman vanuit de middenmoot vertrekt.

Christiaan Lundgaard verzekerde zich van de vijfde startpositie, voor Jake Hughes op P6. Leonardo Pulcini pakte de zevende plaats op de grid, voor Pedro Piquet, David Beckmann en Sebastian Fernandez, die de top 10 afrondde. Op de zevende startrij vinden we het Nederlandse coureursduo: Viscaal trainde zich naar P13, Verschoor moet genoegen nemen met P14.

De eerste race van de FIA Formule 3 op de Red Bull Ring begint zaterdagochtend om 10.25 uur en is live te volgen op Ziggo Sport kanaal 14, Select en Racing.
