FIA Formule 3 gaat niet voor kampioenschap meetellende race rijden op Macau

De FIA Formule 3 zal na afloop van het reguliere seizoen nog een race rijden. De bolides uit het kampioenschap zullen op het stratencircuit van Macau een niet voor het kampioenschap meetellende race rijden.

Al jarenlang namen coureurs uit verschillende Formule 3-kampioenschappen het tegen elkaar op in Macau tijdens de FIA F3 World Cup. Dit jaar heeft de FIA echter een herstructurering doorgevoerd in de Formule 3. De GP3 en het Europees Formule 3 zijn samen het FIA Formule 3 gaan vormen en racen in het voorprogramma van de Formule 1, terwijl de overige Formule 3-klassen nu veredelde regionale kampioenschappen geworden zijn.

Vorig jaar werden er echter vraagtekens gezet bij de veiligheid op het circuit, nadat Sophia Flörsch in de bocht Lisboa door de dranghekken en tegen een huisje voor fotografen vloog. De snelheid van de Formule 3-auto's leek de afgelopen jaren al te hoog te liggen voor de veiligheidsstandaard in Macau, maar desondanks was het de wens van de organisatie om de nog snellere bolides van het FIA Formule 3 naar Macau te halen.

Formule 3 blijft te gast op Guia Circuit in Macau

Dat is nu dus gelukt. Na afloop van het reguliere seizoen, dat in september eindigt in het Russische Sochi, zullen de op de GP3-auto's gebaseerde bolides een niet voor het kampioenschap meetellende race rijden door de straten van Macau. Dat is mede mogelijk gemaakt door een aantal aanpassingen ten behoeve van de veiligheid van de coureurs en fans op het uitdagende circuit.

In een statement van het kampioenschap staat: "Het circuit is zonder twijfel een van de meest uitdagende ter wereld. De veiligheid is altijd de grootste prioriteit voor de FIA en daarom zijn er een aantal updates gedaan voor de editie van 2019, inclusief een nieuw profiel voor de vangrails in Lisboa."

Als je stuurloos, achteruit, op 5 meter hoogte de muur in kan vliegen, moet je daar niet willen fotograferen.
Het is wel altijd een spannende wedstrijd.
