Vips houdt Daruvala van zich af op weg naar zege in hoofdrace op Silverstone

Succes voor Juri Vips in de hoofdrace van de Formule 3 op Silverstone. De coureur van Hitech pakte de zege door zich vrijwel de hele race lang sterk te verdedigen ten opzichte van Jehan Daruvala. Marcus Armstrong pakte de derde positie.

Vips mocht vanaf pole vertrekken en kwam goed weg, maar Armstrong viel meteen terug naar P5 vanaf startpositie 2. Christian Lundgaard wilde de tweede positie ontnemen van Daruvala, maar hij moest zijn aanval onderbreken en zag meteen Leonardo Pulcini voorbij komen. Het duel ging nog even verder, wat gewonnen werd door Lundgaard, terwijl Armstrong meteen weer een plekje op kon schuiven.

Vips vrijwel hele race onder druk van Prema-duo

Meteen daarna begon Daruvala druk te zetten op Vips. De Indiër van Prema deed in de eerste tien ronden verwoede pogingen om voorbij de Est te komen, maar dat lukte niet. Aanvankelijk bouwden ze ook nog een voorsprong op de achtervolgers, maar Armstrong kon daarna door de strijd tussen de leiders makkelijk terugkeren.

De druk verdween even toen Raoul Hyman een safety car veroorzaakte. Bij de herstart wist Vips meteen een gaatje te slaan naar Daruvala en dat bleek uiteindelijk beslissend te zijn. Het was de tweede zege van het seizoen voor Vips, die in de titelstrijd nu ook weer een woordje begint mee te spreken. Daruvala en Armstrong voltooiden het podium namens Prema.

De vierde positie was uiteindelijk voor Pulcini, die Lundgaard in de slotfase nog voorbij ging. Dat gold ook voor Robert Shwartzman en Pedro Piquet, die vijfde en zesde werden. Lundgaard werd zevende, voor Liam Lawson, Jake Hughes en Alex Peroni op de tiende positie.
