Pulcini stormt naar eerste seizoenszege in sprintrace op Silverstone

Op overtuigende wijze heeft Leonardo Pulcini zijn eerste zege in het huidige Formule 3-seizoen gepakt. De Italiaan kwam ruimschoots voor Robert Shwartzman en Liam Lawson over de finish.

Pulcini werd in de race op zaterdag al vierde en mocht daardoor vanaf P5 vertrekken in de tweede wedstrijd van het weekend. Na de openingsronde was hij al opgeklommen naar de derde positie, waarna hij al vroeg in de race ook wist af te rekenen met Pedro Piquet. Eenmaal voorbij de Braziliaan zette Pulcini de jacht in op polesitter Lawson, die hij uiteindelijk in de negende ronde wist te passeren.

Daarna bouwde Pulcini razendsnel een gat van vijf seconden op en dat bracht de Hitech-coureur eigenlijk al in veilige haven. Daarna ging het vooral om de strijd om de overige podiumplaatsen. Shwartzman ging ook snel voorbij aan Piquet en Lawson, waarna hij het gat richting Pulcini maar ten dele kon dichten. Wel maakte hij snel korte metten met zijn twee achtervolgers.

Mooie strijd om laatste podiumplaats

Die bleven tot in de laatste ronde strijden om het laatste podiumplekje. In de voorlaatste ronde kwam Piquet tot een aanval, maar Lawson pareerde die en in de situatie daarna werd de Braziliaan nog uit de race getikt door Jehan Daruvala, die hoopte te profiteren van de strijd voor hem. Lawson werd zodoende derde, terwijl Marcus Armstrong de vierde positie pakte.

De vijfde plaats was weggelegd voor Christian Lundgaard, die profiteerde van het wegvallen van Piquet en Daruvala. David Beckmann schoof op naar P6, terwijl Yuki Tsunoda een geweldige inhaalrace bekroonde met de zevende positie. Het laatste puntje werd gepakt door Fabio Scherer van het Sauber Junior Team by Charouz. De Nederlanders speelden geen rol van betekenis op Silverstone: Bent Viscaal werd twintigste, Richard Verschoor 21ste.
