Shwartzman pakt F3-titel, Armstrong wint eerste race in Rusland

Robert Shwartzman is de eerste kampioen van de nieuwe Formule 3 geworden. De Prema-coureur werd in voor eigen publiek in Rusland tweede achter teamgenoot Marcus Armstong, maar dat was wel voldoende om de titel in de wacht te slepen.

Shwartzman pakte op zaterdag pole position en behield die plek niet na de start, terwijl teamgenoot en rivaal Jehan Daruvala vanaf P2 op de grid terugviel in de wisselende weersomstandigheden in Sochi. Armstrong startte het beste en nam de leiding over van de Rus, terwijl Niko Kari opklom naar de derde positie. Na een safety car wist Kari met een geweldige herstart zelfs de leiding in handen te nemen.

In ronde 11 wilde Armstrong terugslaan, maar zijn inhaalpoging op Kari zorgde ervoor dat ook Shwartzman en Pulcini aan hem voorbijkwamen. Shwartzman, die aan P2 genoeg zou hebben voor de titel door het matige optreden van Daruvala, ging echter voor de zege en wist wel met succes aan Kari voorbij te gaan. Armstrong volgde dat voorbeeld uiteindelijk, om vervolgens in de laatste ronde Shwartzman te passeren.

Armstrong pakte dus de zege, voor Shwartzman en de goed rijdende Kari. Pulcini pakte P4, gevolgd door Daruvala op P5. De zesde positie was voor Pedro Piquet, gevolgd door Jake Hughes op P7. Na een tijdstraf ging de achtste plek naar Jüri Vips, terwijl Raoul Hyman en Richard Verschoor de laatste punten pakten. Bent Viscaal haalde de finish niet: hij viel al in de eerste ronde uit na een crash.
