Vips wint kwalificatierace en pakt pole op Macau, Verschoor vierde

Juri Vips zal de Grand Prix van Macau zondag vanaf pole position aan mogen vangen. De Est zette zijn pole position voor de kwalificatierace om in de winst en pakte daarmee de eerste startpositie. Richard Verschoor vertrekt morgen vanaf P4.

Vips had zich op vrijdag verzekerd van de eerste startpositie voor de kwalificatierace en daar profiteerde hij optimaal van. Hij behield de leiding bij de start, voorkwam dat Robert Shwartzman een slipstream kreeg in ronde 1 en in de DRS-zone kon blijven, waardoor hij relatief onbedreigd na tien ronden als winner over de finish kwam. Het gat naar Shwartzman, de Formule 3-kampioen van dit jaar, was anderhalve seconde.

Vanaf startplek 4 kwam Christian Lundgaard goed van zijn plek en op de eerste rechte lijn ging hij voorbij aan Callum Ilott, die de race vanaf P3 mocht aanvangen. Lundgaard kwam na tien ronden vervolgens eenzaam als derde over de finish, terwijl Ilott meer moeite had om het tempo vast te houden. De Brit kwam onder druk van Verschoor te staan, die twee ronden voor het einde in Lisboa aan hem voorbijging.

Ilott kwam uiteindelijk als vijfde over de finish, voor Logan Sargeant, Alessio Lorandi, Ferdinand Habsburg, David Beckmann en Leonardo Pulcini. Sargeant was nog wel betrokken bij een opvallend incident in de eerste ronde. De Brit tikte Arjun Maini de muur in in Lisboa, waarna meerdere coureurs geen kant op konden. Jake Hughes viel daardoor uit, terwijl Daniel Ticktum terug moest naar de pits voor reparaties.

De 66ste Grand Prix van Macau wordt zondag verreden. De race vangt om 08.30 uur Nederlandse tijd aan.
