Jenzer haalt neefje Alessandro Nannini naar FIA Formule 3

Jenzer Motorsport heeft haar tweede coureur voor het nieuwe Formule 3-seizoen binnen. De Italiaan Matteo Nannini zal Calan Williams in 2020 vergezellen bij het Zwitserse team.

Nannini heeft zijn promotie naar het voorportaal van de Formule 1 te danken aan zijn sterke prestaties in het Formule 4-kampioenschap van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. Daarin scoorde hij op weg naar de titel zeven overwinningen, 16 podiumplaatsen en zes pole positions. Daarnaast reed Nannini enkele races in het Spaans Formule 4 en de Formula Regional European.

"Ik kijk er heel erg naar uit om naar de FIA Formule 3 te verkassen", zei Nannini. "Ik heb in het voorseizoen getest met Jenzer en ik ben blij dat ik mijn carrière voort kan zetten met dit geweldige team. Ik weet dat de serie bijzonder competitief is en de meeste circuits zijn nieuw voor mij. Ik heb er echter behoorlijk veel vertrouwen in dat ik het goed zal doen."

Nannini in voetsporen van oom Alessandro?

De 16-jarige Nannini is een neefje van voormalig Formule 1-coureur Alessandro Nannini, die tussen 1986 en 1990 in 76 Grands Prix van start ging voor Minardi en Benetton. Zijn enige zege pakte Nannini tijdens de Japanse Grand Prix van 1989. Een jaar later kwam zijn carrière abrupt ten einde, nadat zijn rechter onderarm veel schade opliep bij een helikopterongeluk. Matteo Nannini zal hopen dat hij in ieder geval in de voetsporen van zijn oom naar de Formule 1 kan komen.

"Werken met Matteo tijdens de test liet ons zijn grote potentie zien. We zijn erg blij dat we hem in ons FIA Formule 3-team hebben en we kijken ernaar uit om samen een geweldig seizoen te hebben", verklaart teambaas Andreas Jenzer. Afgelopen seizoen pakte zijn team één overwinning, op weg naar de zevende plaats in het kampioenschap voor de teams. De zege werd gepakt door Yuki Tsunoda.
