Zoon Ralf Schumacher maakt met Charouz stap naar Formule 3

David Schumacher zet in 2020 een nieuwe stap richting de Formule 1. De zoon van voormalig Formule 1-coureur Ralf Schumacher zal namens Charouz promotie maken naar het FIA Formule 3-kampioenschap.

Schumacher is niet helemaal onbekend met de Formule 3. Afgelopen jaar maakte hij in Sochi zijn debuut in de klasse bij Campos Racing. Daar was de Duitser de vervanger van de op Monza zwaar gecrashte Alex Peroni. Daarna reed hij al namens Charouz mee in de Grand Prix van Macau, waar hij 21ste werd. Toch was dat wel voldoende om het team te overtuigen hem in 2020 een heel seizoen te laten rijden.

"Ik ben blij en dankbaar dat ik nu fulltime over kan stappen naar de Formule 3", verklaart Schumacher. "Vorig jaar heb ik al twee weekenden meegemaakt en dat zie ik als een goede voorbereiding op het komende seizoen. Ik heb veel over de auto geleerd en die kennis is waardevol, omdat we tijdens het raceweekend maar weinig kunnen testen. Ik denk dat we dit jaar een goede stap kunnen zetten en ik ga proberen zo hoog mogelijk te eindigen."

In de afgelopen twee seizoenen reed Schumacher rond in het Formula Regional European, met een achtste plaats in 2019 als beste klassering in dat kampioenschap. Momenteel rijdt de 18-jarige Duitser zijn ronden nog in de MRF Challenge in Azië. Schumacher reed daar in vier van de negen races mee en scoorde daarbij twee overwinningen, een tweede en een derde plaats.

Esporter als teamgenoot voor Schumacher

Bij Charouz krijgt Schumacher gezelschap van twee teamgenoten. De eerste luistert naar de naam Niko Kari, de voormalig Red Bull-junior die de afgelopen jaren schipperde tussen de GP3/F3 en de Formule 2. Zijn tweede teamgenoot is Igor Fraga. De opmars van Fraga is opmerkelijk: hij nam in 2017 deel aan het eerste seizoen van de F1 Esports Series en mag het in 2020 dus in de Formule 3 proberen.

Als je je nog goed kan herrineren dat hun papa's zelf als jong broekie in de F1 debuteerden dan ben je oud... ben zelf 38 maar voel mij soms echt een oude lul ?

  Hoogie35 nee ik snap dit ook niet zo hoe men hier op kan oordelen. Vandoorne & Palmer leken eigenlijk ook goed genoeg voor F1... totaal niet geworden. Albon leek totaal niet F1 te gaan halen... blijkt beter te presteren dan belofte Gasly... De ene auto/klasse sluit misschien ook net even wat beter aan op iemands rijstijl. Neem Nyck De Vries... Die F2 auto paste totaal niet bij hem.

  Palmer ok, maar Stoffel is en was zeker goed genoeg de omstandigheden hebben er helaas anders over beslist, ik sluit niet uit dat Stoffel ooit nog terug in de F1 komt trouwens.

  Michael Schumacher had voor zijn F1 debuut het Formula Konig kampioenschap(1988) gewonnen door 9 van de 10 races te winnen en de race die hij niet won stond hij ook op het podium.
  
  Vervolgens werd hij in zijn 1e jaar(1989) van het Duits F3 kampioenschap 3e met 2 overwinningen en 7 podiums in 12 races en won hij in zijn 2e jaar(1990) het kampioenschap, daarnaast reed hij dat jaar 3 Grouo C wedstrijden waarbij hij elke race op het podium stond en 1 race won en won hij dat jaar ook de Macau GP.
  
  dus waar mensen die onzin vandaan halen dat Michael Schumacher voor de F1 niet succesvol was is mij een raadsel: van de 54 races die hij reed voor de F1 won hij er 22 en haalde hij 36 podiums
