Juan Manuel Correa keert bij ART terug in de autosport

Juan Manuel Correa gaat weer racen. De 21-jarige Amerikaan met Ecuadoraanse roots stapt bij ART Grand Prix in voor een seizoen in de Formule 3. Correa raakte anderhalf jaar geleden zwaar gewond aan zijn benen - meerdere botbreuken - bij de enorme crash tijdens de Formule 2-race op Spa-Francorchamps waarbij Anthoine Hubert om het leven kwam.

Na een lange revalidatie is hij nu dus terug en krijgt hij een nieuwe kans van ART Grand Prix. Correa: "In eerste instantie wil ik benadrukken dat ik ontzettend blij ben om weer te gaan racen, gezien wat ik allemaal heb doorstaan. Ik ben ART Grand Prix ook zeer dankbaar, het betekent veel voor me dat ze in mij en mijn comeback geloven. De Formule 1 is nog altijd mijn doel en de Formule 3 is een hernieuwde eerste stap in die richting."

Hij vervolgt: "Ik loop misschien wat hard van stapel met mijn doelstellingen, want ik heb al anderhalf jaar niet meer met een raceauto gereden en er staat me een steile leercurve te wachten. Ik vang het seizoen met een open instelling aan, ik ga mezelf niet te veel druk opleggen. Ik ga mijn best doen, ik doe hetgeen waar ik het meest van hou en dat op zich is al een overwinning."

Namens ART voegt Sebastien Philippe toe: "Na zijn afschuwelijke crash op Spa op 30 augustus 2019 is Juan Manuel door verschillende fases gegaan, maar hij is altijd blijven knokken en wilde zijn droom om op het hoogste niveau te racen niet opgeven. Hij vormt het toonbeeld van moed en doorzettingsvermogen en wij van ART zijn trots om hem een nieuwe kans te geven. Juan Manuel is mentaal ijzersterk, hij vecht om zo fit mogelijk te geraken en hij is hongerig. En achter het stuur van een raceauto beschikt hij over hartstikke veel talent. Het doet ons dan ook deugd dat hij zijn carrière bij ons kan hervatten."

Mooi dat ART hem die kans wil geven. Die jongen was bijna zijn benen kwijt en moet van giga ver komen. Het zal interssant worden om te zien of hij weer op niveau kan komen of zelfs nog beter dan dat kan worden.

  Rimmer je heb best kans dat hij de F1 gaat halen, hij weet wat overleven en vechten is, als je dat bezit kan je alles bereiken!

dat ik het hem van harte gun is een understatement. Berkuipt mij meer het gevoel van een olympische gedachte, dan de weg naar de top, maar is hem op voorhand al vergeven
