David Schumacher wint eerste F3-race uit zijn loopbaan

David Schumacher heeft zijn eerste Formule 3-race uit zijn loopbaan gewonnen. Op de Red Bull Ring in Oostenrijk was de zoon van Ralf Schumacher heer en meester in de tweede sprintrace. Frederik Vesti werd tweede en leider in de tussenstand Dennis Hauger finishte derde na een knappe inhaalrace.

Schumacher start vanaf pole dankzij de reverse-grid-regel. Het veld van in totaal 31 coureurs komen ongeschonden de eerste bochten door.

Pas in de derde ronde vindt er een incident plaats met Logan Sargeant en Tijmen van der Helm. De Nederlander in dienst van MP-Motorsport tikt de Amerikaan van achteren en gaan samen van de baan af. Dit veroorzaakt de eerste neutralisatie.

In ronde 5 van de 24 wordt de sprintrace hervat. Schumacher heeft nog steeds de leiding met Roman Stanek achter hem aan. De zoon van Ralf Schumacher slaat een gat van een seconde. Hierna dendert Schumacher door en creëert een marge van twee tellen.

Jak Crawfard heeft ondertussen Stanek ingehaald voor P2 totdat het misgaat bij de Amerikaan. Zijn Hitech Grand Prix-bolide valt bijna stil en Crawfard ziet een podium als sneeuw voor de zon verdwijnen. Juan Manuel Correra* en Stanek profiteren.

Maar Correra zijn opmars wordt in ronde 11 abrupt gestopt na een tik van landgenoot Kaylen Frederick in bocht drie. Beide wagens spinnen in de rondte. Victor Martins kan door deze clash doorstoten naar P3. Door de stilstaande bolides van beide Amerikanen wordt de Virtual Safety Car geactiveerd.

Schumacher heeft wat lucht door de strijd achter hem. Stanek en Martins houden elkaar bezig om P2 en verliezen tijd op de Duitser. Vesti is ondertussen opgeklommen naar P4, maar vormt geen bedreiging voor het podium.

In ronde 15 passeert Martins de Tsjech voor de tweede positie. Het gat naar Schumacher is drie seconden en een overwinning met minder tien ronden te gaan, is ver weg. Op het eind valt Martins voor MP Motorsport plots stil. Vesti schuift hierdoor op naar P2.

Kampioenschapsleider en Red Bull-junior Hauger rijdt opnieuw een sterke inhaalrace en rijdt zichzelf naar P3, mede dankzij de malaise voor hem.

Schumacher komt na 24 ronden als eerste over de eindstreep. Vesti finisht op de tweede plek. Hauger pakt op P3 waardevolle punten voor het kampioenschap en loopt verder uit op zijn concurrenten.

In de stand staat Hauger op 95 punten. Jack Doohan volgt met 72 en Martins blijft steken op 66 door zijn nulscore in de tweede sprintrace.

*Correra is de rijder die betrokken was bij de dodelijke crash van Antoine Hubert in 2019. Hij raakte zelf zwaargewond. Na een lange revalidatie keerde de Amerikaan dit seizoen terug in de Formule 3.
