Hadjar wint openingsrace in Bahrein dankzij tijdstraf Bearman

PREMA-coureur Oliver Bearman kwam als eerste over de meet bij de openingsrace en eerste springwedstrijd van het seizoen, maar moest zijn zege afstaan aan Red Bull-junior en F3-debutant Isack Hadjar.

Bearman begon op de eerste startrij. In de kwalificatie finishte de Britse coureur als elfde, maar door de reverse-grid-regel werd de top twaalf van de kwalificatie omgedraaid en stond dus vooraan. Op pole stond hierdoor Zak O' Sullivan.

In het begin kon O' Sullivan de leiding vasthouden, maar moest de ontketende Bearman uiteindelijk voorbij laten. Die reed meteen weg van de rest en kwam met meer dan drie seconden voorsprong als eerste over de finishlijn.

Hadjar, die als vierde startte, werd tweede, maar kreeg onverwachts toch de overwinning toegeworpen omdat Bearman te vaak de baanlimieten overschreed en een tijdstraf kreeg. De Brit moest hierdoor genoegen nemen met P2. De Rus Alex Smolyar, rijdend onder een neutrale vlag, maakte het podium compleet.

De snelste man van de kwalificatie, Franco Colapinto, moest starten vanaf P12, maar kende een wedstrijd met veel tegenslag en viel ruimschoots buiten de top tien. Colapinto zorgde voor een primeur door voot het debuterende Van Amersfoort Racing de pole te pakken. In de hoofdrace van zondag, start 11.40 Nederlandse tijd, mag de 18-jarige Argentijn vooraan beginnen en op jacht gaan naar eremetaal.
