Colapinto wint voor VAR na zinderende ontknoping

Van Amersfoort Racing heeft voor de allereerste keer een zege geboekt in de Formule 3. Franco Colapinto reed op Imola voor het Nederlandse team als eerste over de meet na een driemansgevecht om P1 in de allerlaatste ronde. De andere twee, Caio Collet en Isack Hadjar, haakten in elkaar en knalden er samen vanaf bij de eerste chicane vlak na start en finish. Hierdoor profiteerden Victor Martins en Jak Crawford en die schoven op naar de tweede en derde plaats in een race met bomvol crashes en neutralisaties.

Colapinto mocht dankzij de reverse-grid-regel op pole staan in de sprintrace zaterdagochtend. Bij de start behield Colapinto de leiding met Caio Collet in de achtervolging. Isack Hadjar startte vanaf P6 en stormde richting de koplopers.

Colapinto reed een aantal ronden aan de leiding, maar Collet maakte steeds meer aanstalten. Met behulp van DRS passeerde de Braziliaan Colapinto. De Argetijn moest ook oppassen voor Hadjar, maar door een neutralisatie in de negende ronde kreeg Colapinto wat lucht.

Wat was er gebeurd? Zak O'Sullivan ging wijd over de kerbs en kon zijn bolide niet meer onder controle houden. De Brit ging achterstevoren de vangrail in. Vlak daarna knalde onverwachts Josep Maria Marti in de zijkant van O'Sullivans wagen. De Virtual Safety Car werd geactiveerd en toen de marshalls de rotzooi moesten opruimen, kwam de Safety Car de baan op.

In de twaalfde ronde van de totaal twintig werd het veld weer losgelaten. Lang van de groene vlag konden de coureurs niet genieten, want het volgende incident diende zich aan. Reece Ushijima en Frederico Malvestiti stonden samen geparkeerd in de grindbak. Ushijima had niet in de gaten dat iemand naast hem zat en veroorzaakte de klapper. De Safety Car moest voor de tweede keer uitrukken.

Met vier ronden voor de boeg werd de baan opnieuw vrijgegeven. Collet als koplope met Colapinto en Hadjar in zijn kielzog. Niet veel later werd de VSC geactiveerd vanwege troep op de baan door touchés van coureurs bij de herstart. De neutralisatie duurde niet lang en in ronde 18 ging het gevecht vooraan verder.

Colapinto bleef op de staart van Collet, maar moest eerst verdedigen ten opzichte van Hadjar. Toch bleef de Argentijn binnen de DRS van Collet en kon daar van profiteren in de laatste ronde. De Van Amersfoort Racing-coureur haalde Collet bij de eerste beste mogelijkheid in. Collet zelf verloor het momentum hierdoor en Hadjar wilde daarvan gebruik maken. Maar bij de Variatie Tamburello vergaloppeerde Collet zich en nam Hadjar mee. Colapinto had hierdoot geen dreiging meer van achteren en pakte een historische zege voor Van Amersfoort Racing, die dit jaar debuteerde in de Formule 3.
