Hoofdrace: Maloney verslaat Martins in Zandvoort, VAR pakt podium

Zane Maloney trekt de goede lijn van Spa-Francorchamps door en wint ook de hoofdrace op Zandvoort. De coureur uit Barbados versloeg titelkandidaat Victor Martins in een wedstrijd volop neutralisaties. Het podium kreeg ook een Nederlands tintje door Franco Colapinto. De Argentijn reed voor Van Amersfoort Racing naar een derde plek.

Maloney vertrok pole, maar het was Martins die brutaal de leiding wilde afpakken. Maloney drukte de Fransman naar de pitmuur, echter Martins hield zijn poot stijf en nam na de Tarzanbocht de leiding over.

In ronde vier tikte Brad Benavides de achterkant van William Alatalo aan in bocht twee. Beiden vlogen de grindbak in met een Safety Car tot gevolg. De neutralisatie eindigde in ronde zeven.

Bij ingaan van de achtste ronde wilde Jak Crawford de tweede positie aanvallen van Maloney. Maar de inhaalactie buitenom in de Tarzanbocht mislukte. De Amerikaan kwam buiten de baan en moest op P9 aansluiten. Door het wegvallen van Crawford schoof Colapinto op naar de derde plaats.

Maloney reed richting de staart van koploper Martins. In ronde twaalf zette de Trident-coureur de aanval in bij de Tarzanbocht. De polesitter deed een move via de buitenkant, lokte Martins uit om te verdedigen en stak hem daarna binnendoor bij ingaan van de tweede bocht. Na de Hugenholtzbocht had Maloney de leiding heroverd.

Martins verloor de aansluiting en kreeg druk van Colapinto. Maar twee neutralisaties door gestrande bolides zorgden voor wat lucht. In ronde 17 stond Vidales geparkeerd en in ronde 21 tikte Juan Manuel Correa in de eerste bocht Rafael Villagomez in de rondte en die bleef vastzitten in het grind. Na deze onderbrekingen kon het veld tijdelijk geen gebruik maken van DRS en werd inhalen bijna onmogelijk op Zandvoort.

Martins werd dus tweede achter Maloney en nam de leiding over van Isack Hadjar in de rangschikking. Martins heeft nu 126 punten, vijf meer dan Hadjar. Vanaf P3 tot en met P6 zit het ook dicht bij elkaar met Roman Stanek (109), Oliver Bearman (106), Maloney (102) en Arthur Leclerc (101). Crawford (90) volgt op gepaste afstand.

Met 41 punten nog te verdienen in Monza doen al deze bovenstaande coureurs nog mee voor het kampioenschap. Het belooft een zeer spannende finale te worden in Italië volgende week.
