Hoofdrace: Bortoleto wint race dankzij late Safety Car, drama voor Mini

Gabriel Bortoleto kende een teleurstellende zaterdag met een negentiende plek, maar nam revanche in de hoofdrace door de wedstrijd naar zich toe te trekken. De Braziliaan versloeg in het duel om de zege polesitter Gabriel Mini, die door een vijf-seconden-straf en een late Safety Car zijn zege in rook op zag gaan. Teamgenoot van Bortoleto, Olivier Goethe, maakte het Trident-feestje compleet door als tweede te eindigen. FRECA-kampioen van 2022 Dino Beganovic pakte het laatste podiumplekje. De wedstrijd werd onder geel afgevlagd.

Na regen komt zonneschijn

Bortoleto was zeer geëmotioneerd na overwinning in de hoofdrace. Tijdens de sprintrace was de Trident-coureur nog de schlemiel. Hij kreeg een tijdstraf van 10 seconden voor het veroorzaken van een botsing met Rafael Villagómez.

Bij de hoofdrace startte de pas 18-jarige vanaf de tweede positie achter de Alpine-junior Mini. Bij het doven van de lichten pakte Bortoleto de leiding en nam een flinke marge op zijn achtervolgers. Maar een Safety Car-periode na een stilstaande wagen op de baan aan het begin van de race gooide roet in het eten. Het veld kwam weer bijeen.

Mini profiteerde van de herstart en veroverde opnieuw P1 die hij kwijt was bij de start. Echter, de Italiaan kreeg een tijdstraf van vijf seconden omdat hij niet met zijn wagen goed in het startvak stond op de grid.

De Trident-coureur probeerde weg te rijden bij zijn opponent, maar dat lukte niet echt, maar een podium was zeker nog een mogelijkheid. Maar ook dat feest ging niet door na een late Safety Car. Mini was erg verbolgen hierover en moest genoegen nemen met een achtste positie.

Bortoleto wist door de neutralisatie dat de race een prooi voor hem zou worden en pakte zijn eerste zege in de Formule 3 en neemt ook de leiding in het kampioenschap. De volgende ontmoeting is in Melbourne en dat is voor de F3 de allereerste keer dat ze in Melbourne gaan rijden.
