Zak O'Sullivan heeft de sprintrace in Australië op zijn naam geschreven nadat Franco Colapinto is gestraft voor het overtreden van het technische reglement. Er werden carrosseriedelen gevonden die buiten de reglementaire limieten vielen. Zijn MP Motorsport-teamgenoten Mari Boya en Jonny Edgar zijn ook gediskwalificeerd vanwege dezelfde technische overtreding.

De wedstrijd begon direct met chaos. Een paar keer moest de Safety Car uitrukken en somnige coureurs hadden moeite om hun bolide op de baan te houden.

In ronde dertien was er wel een erg opmerkelijke klapper. Dat zorgde opnieuw voor een neutralisatie.

In ronde 17 van de 20 ging het veld weer van start. Dit zorgde voor een spectaculair slot in de strijd om de overwinning.

Colapinto finishte als eerste en mocht de beker in ontvangst nemen, maar moest hem dus later weer inleveren na de diskwalificatie. O'Sullivan won voor Sebastián Montoya en Paul Aron.

De hoofdrace is zondag om 01.00 uur Nederlandse tijd.
