Roberto Merhi bestraft, Wittmann krijgt voorlopige pole in handen

Roberto Merhi is na afloop van de eerste kwalificatie in Macau bestraft met een gridpenalty. De Spanjaard was in de eerste sessie maar liefst 1,6 seconden sneller dan zijn achtervolgers, maar volgens de wedstrijdleiding heeft hij, samen met nog zes andere coureurs, bij het uitkomen van de pitlane over de witte streep gereden.

Dat is verboden en dus moet Merhi drie plaatsen inleveren op de voorlopige startopstelling. Hij zakt naar de vierde positie, terwijl Euroseries-rivaal Marco Wittmann nu de pole in handen heeft gekregen. Brits Formule 3-coureur Felipe Nasr schuift op naar de tweede plaats, gevolgd door Merhi's teamgenoot Daniel Juncadella.

Naast Merhi zijn ook Carlos Munoz (gekwalificeerd als 21e), Laurens Vanthoor (18e), Marko Asmer (17e) en Felix Rosenqvist (10e) met drie plaatsen bestraft. Rosenqvist is echter teruggezet naar de laatste positie op de voorlopige grid nadat hij onder gele vlaggen zou hebben ingehaald. Tevens zal Hironobu Yasuda (gekwalificeerd als laatste) officieel zes posities moeten inleveren omdat hij tweemaal de witte lijn zou hebben overschreden. Hannes van Asseldonk blijft daardoor op de knappe zevende stek staan.
