Marco Wittmann verslaat Nasr en wint kwalificatierace

Marco Wittmann heeft vanochtend de kwalificatierace in Macau op zijn naam geschreven. De Duitse coureur was in de eerste race van het weekend niet te verslaan en bleef de Britse Formule 3-kampioen Filipe Nasr voor. Hannes van Asseldonk reed een solide race en kwam als tiende over de finish.

Het werd Wittmann niet al te moeilijk gemaakt in de race. Al bij de start kon hij een mooie voorsprong opbouwen nadat Antonio Felix da Costa nauwelijks wegkwam toen zijn eerste versnelling kapot ging. Al vanaf dat moment kon er niemand meer in de buurt komen van leider Wittmann en consolideerde zijn voorsprong van anderhalve seconde.

Nasr moest vooral in zijn spiegels kijken, want Roberto Merhi had een briljante openingsronde. De Spaanse Euroseries-kampioen ging in de eerste ronde van de achtste naar de vierde stek en ging een ronde later al voorbij al Vatteri Bottas.

Enkele pogingen om Nasr nog voorbij te steken mislukten en Merhi zag zijn kansen op de tweede plaats verdampen toen de safety car in de negende ronde naar buiten werd geroepen na een crash van Jimmy Eriksson. Daardoor reed Wittmann makkelijk als leider over de finish, gevolgd door Nasr en Merhi.

Valtteri Bottas, die afgelopen week nog in actie kwam in Abu Dhabi tijdens de young driver tests, eindigde als vierde, gevolgd door Carlos Huertas en Daniel Juncadella. Laurens Vanthoor eindigde de eerste race als zevende, Daniel Abt werd achtste, Kimiya Sato en Hannes van Asseldonk eindigde een solide race op de tiende stek.

Alexander Sims had zich als vierde gekwalificeerd voor het Japanse TOM'S-team, maar ging de race niet eens van start. De Britse coureur crashte al in zijn ronde op weg naar de startgrid.
