Carlo van Dam tekent bij Volkswagen

Duits Formule 3-kampioen Carlo van Dam zal volgend weekend voor Volkswagen rijden in de Formule 3 Euroseries. Tijdens het laatste weekend van de F3 Euroseries zal Van Dam de Amerikaan Jonathan Summerton vervangen.

Nadat Van Dam afgelopen weekend op Oschersleben ook de laatste race van het seizoen had gewonnen, werd hij benaderd door Volkswagen-sportdirecteur Kris Nissen. Eén telefoontje van de Duitser voor deelname aan de sterk bezette F3 Euroseries was genoeg om gisteren naar Hannover af te reizen. In de rijke autosporthistorie van Volkswagen wordt aan het Formule 3-project een nieuw hoofdstuk toegevoegd. Volkswagen won in 1991 met Tom Kristensen achter het stuur de laatste titel met een Formule 3-motor.

Nadat Volkswagen een maand geleden zijn comeback als motorenleverancier in de F3 Euroseries maakte met twee top tien finishes, hoopt het team volgend jaar om de overwinningen te kunnen meestrijden. Van Dam bewaard goede herinneringen aan Hockenheim, waar hij in het eerste weekend van de ATS Formule 3-Cup met een overwinning de basis legde voor zijn successen. Van Dam vervangt bij RC Motorsport de Amerikaan Jonathan Summerton.

Carlo van Dam vertelde exclusief aan F1Today.nl: Het is de laatste week allemaal erg snel gegaan. Een paar weken geleden ben ik benaderd door Kris Nissen, oud DTM-coureur, van Volkswagen Motorsport om te praten over de F3 Euroseries. Ik ben gisteren naar het hoofdkwartier van Volkswagen Motorsport in Hannover gegaan waar we een bespreking hebben gehad en een contract voor Hockenheim hebben getekend. Gisteravond heeft het team direct mijn maten voor een overall opgenomen, voorlopig heb ik om goed te zitten in ieder geval mijn stoeltje van Van Amersfoort meegenomen, waarschijnlijk ga ik daarmee rijden."

"Ik ga onbevangen het weekend, er komt ineens zoveel op je af in zo'n korte periode. Ik zie vanzelf hoe het loopt maar het doel is om natuurlijk beter te presteren dan mijn teamgenoot. Of het lukt om in de top 5 te rijden weet ik niet, ASM is namelijk ontzettend snel in de F3 Euroseries maar top 10 moet mogelijk zijn naar mijn idee. Misschien dat ik voor de finale in Hockenheim volgend weekend ook komende week nog één dag ga testen met Volkswagen maar dat is nog niet zeker."
