Frijns sluit seizoen af met tweede zege, Vergne voor tweede jaar op rij kampioen

Robin Frijns heeft in New York de laatste Formule E-race van het seizoen gewonnen. In dezelfde race werd Jean-Eric Vergne de eerste coureur die een tweede titel behaalde in de elektrische klasse.

Frijns startte de race vanaf P2, maar verloor die positie bij de start meteen aan Sebastien Buemi. Alexander Sims wist de leiding te behouden. Er kwam echter een safety car naar buiten toen de Techeetah van Andre Lotterer moest opgeven na een botsing met Jose Maria Lopez. Na de hervatting was Frijns duidelijk sterker dan Buemi en Sims, die hij beide wist te passeren op weg naar zijn tweede zege van het seizoen.

Op ruim drie seconden achterstand pakte Sims de tweede positie, waarbij hij Buemi maar nipt voor wist te blijven. Sam Bird, de teamgenoot van Frijns bij Envision Virgin Racing, pakte de vierde plaats, terwijl Daniel Abt vijfde werd en ook de snelste ronde van de race reed. P6 was voor Oliver Rowland, terwijl Vergne aan zijn zevende positie meer dan voldoende had om de titel binnen te halen.

Botsing Di Grassi en Evans geeft Vergne vroegtijdig de titel

Vergne begon met een comfortabele voorsprong van 22 punten op Lucas di Grassi aan de race, terwijl ook Mitch Evans nog een theoretische kans op de titel had. De Fransman startte vanaf P12 en deelde de zesde rij met Di Grassi, maar waar hij een aantal posities goed wist te maken, lukte dat de Braziliaan en de Nieuw-Zeelander niet. Het ging zelfs van kwaad tot erger, want in de laatste ronde botsten Di Grassi en Evans, waardoor Vergne vroegtijdig zeker was van het kampioenschap.

Voor Techeetah was het een prettige dag in de straten van Brooklyn. Het team wist ondanks het uitvallen van Lotterer toch het kampioenschap voor de teams te winnen, terwijl Vergne met 136 punten de titel bij de coureurs veiligstelde. Door zijn derde plaats klom Buemi naar plek 2 in de titelstrijd met 119 punten, terwijl Di Grassi op 108 punten bleef en naar P3 zakte. Met zijn tweede zege is Frijns uiteindelijk op de vierde plaats in het kampioenschap geëindigd.

Dit was een masterclass van Robin. Een flinke goedmaker voor alle pech van de afgelopen 4 races en toch nog mooi opgeklommen naar P4 in het kampioenschap. Volgend jaar gooi naar de titel doen en dat houd ook in, beter kwalificeren!

Wat een heerlijke race en wat een gekkenhuis. Het lijkt de Moto3 wel.

De concurrentie was alleen maar naar achteren aan het kijken. Frijns heeft van alle coureurs de meest relaxte race gehad.

Dit was het leukste seizoen tot nu in de FE. Af en toe heerlijk chaotisch, veel verschillende winnaars en vooral spanning of iedereen wel het eind van de race ging halen. Frijns had een paar leuke uitschieters maar eigenlijk moeten beide Virgins zich een beetje verder naar voren kunnen kwalificeren. Je zag hoeveel het nu scheelde en hoe ongelofelijk laat álle Audi's kunnen remmen (ook Bird, Di Grassi en Abt hadden een heel goede auto voor dit circuit)

  Ik denk dat de nieuwe auto’s de sport echt vooruit hebben gebracht. De auto swaps waren weliswaar noodzakelijk maar voelde niet ok. Ik ben heel benieuwd wat volgend seizoen maar ook verder in de toekomst een volgende iteratie gaat brengen. Wellicht groeien van straten naar volledige circuits?
