Sims pakt eerste pole position in Saoedi-Arabië, De Vries knap derde

De eerste pole position van het nieuwe Formule E-seizoen is voor Alexander Sims. De coureur van BMW was in de Superpole in Ad-Diriyah ruim twee tienden van een seconde sneller dan Stoffel Vandoorne. Nyck de Vries debuteert met een derde startpositie.

Net als in het afgelopen seizoen werden de coureurs in vier groepen de baan opgestuurd voor het eerste deel van de kwalificatie, waarmee plaatsing voor de Superpole afgedwongen kon worden. Daarbij kwamen veel titelkandidaten van vorig jaar al in de eerste twee delen van de kwalificatie op de baan en dat bleek voor hun rondetijden ongunstig te zijn.

Een van de slachtoffers was Robin Frijns. De Nederlander werd vorig jaar vierde in het kampioenschap, moest daardoor vroeg aantreden in de kwalificatie en kwam vervolgens niet verder dan de twaalfde startpositie. Ook regerend kampioen Jean-Eric Vergne (11de), Sebastien Buemi (14de) en Lucas di Grassi (19de) sneuvelden al voordat in de Superpole bepaald werd wie de pole position voor race 1 in de wacht zou slepen.

Die eer ging uiteindelijk naar Sims. De Brit van BMW Andretti reed in de laatste sessie een 1:14.563, waarmee hij een kleine drie tienden van een seconde sneller was dan Vandoorne. De Belg zat er namens nieuwkomer Mercedes meteen goed bij en dat kan ook van debutant De Vries worden gezegd: op nog geen tiende van teamgenoot Vandoorne reed hij de derde tijd. Edoardo Mortara pakte P4, voor Sam Bird en Jerome d'Ambrosio.

De eerste Formule E-race van het seizoen 2019/20 is vanaf 12.00 uur te zien bij Eurosport en Ziggo Sport Racing.

Slipstreamen bij de start achter die nr 1 heb je ook gelijk Stoffel te pakken, effe een psychologische dauw uitdelen aan je teambuddy.

Waarom racen ze op een vrijdag? Normaal is het zaterdag, of ook op zondag als er 2 races zijn. Vermoedelijk zal het WTCR er ook racen dit weekend...?
Blijf de groepsverdeling raar vinden tijdens een pole, zo wordt 1 groep altijd benadeeld (track temperatuur, rubber, weersomstandigheden etc.)
Desniettemin een top prestatie van het Mercedes team.

Het zal nog een lastige race voor Nyck gaan worden. De FE is zo totaal anders dan dat hij gewend is. Maar wie weet heeft hij juist een heel goed gevoel voor de FE.

Waarom stopt de FE je met de kwalificatie in een tijdsblok als over het algemeen het makkelijker is om in het laatste tijdsblok de beste tijd neer te zetten? Bewuste regulering om het "spannender" te maken?
